Title: How big is your collection?
Post by: Skeet on July 29, 2004, 04:41:16 pm
Just out of interest, how big are peoples libraries? I have about 15,000 tunes, which works great. Am I likely to encounter any degredation in performance with a much larger library?

10,202 all music... I have other pictures and videos...

I seen a post a while back that had someone with over 100K....

Apparently JRiver used this to do there testing if I remember correctly/

Yeah, judging by all the posts and feedback over the past year, JRiver has invested a lot of time into supporting huge databases.  8)

And FYI, from what I understand, MC 11 with its relational database makes managing huge databases a breeze. ;)

I'm at about 17 000 music (nearly all mp3 VBR High), about 3000 pix and about 200 videos.

Some people have posted with as many as 100k with no appreciable loss of performance.

Not including my Don & Mike Radio Show :) collection, I have about 9000 music files.  99% of them are APE (the only MP3's in my collection are some comedy CDs I have).

aah, this question comes up all the time (i even asked it myself once)...

i have 25,000 audio files and about 30,000 files in total - including video's and images. This all fills up about 250 gigs.

However there are people out there with closer to 150,000 files (King used to have well over 100k) and there are also several people out there with over 1Tb of data

Do a search and see what comes up...

Gamer - youre right, J River used (maybe still do) King's old library for testing functions.

I have about 40.000 audio files (ape and mp3) on my pc, which is an old Celeron 566Mhz with 128 MB. So I might have the highest audiofiles/Mhz ratio?

About 34000 mp3 files all ripped at 224.  Main library resides on a Powervault 705N (4x120gb) Raid 5. Identical secondary 705N offsite for redundancy. Audiotron piped through home stereo and a Rio Nitrus complete my thirst for tunes.  Life can be good  8)

4,869 .jpg files (5.5 GB)

I'm starting to crowd the 200 GB partition I have all my media located on.  Time to start shopping for more space!

1,000+ WAV
3,100+ FLAC
7,700+ SHN
22,000+ APE

For a total of almost 34,000 lossless tracks from over 1000 different "artists".  Roughly half are from commercial CDs (All purchased by me) and the other half are live shows and studio out-take collections obtained through trading.

31318 mp3s (183gb).

I had some trouble importing media awhile back.  A few thousand of my files would lose their altered properties (i don't change tags) every time I imported media.  I had to backup library > import media > export 'recently imported' playlist as MPL playlist > restore library > import media (the MPL playlist) every time.  Strangely, and to my delight, this problem was gone when I imported media that took my total to over 30,000.  It's been fine ever since.  I had a look back to see when it was I started backing up my libraries, and it was when i had just a shade over 20,000 files.  I've never heard of anyone else having such issues so I wouldn't worry.  Backing up your library often is a good habit to get into though.
