Good Morning All...
I am looking for a decent set of headphones that I won't need to mortgage my house for...
I am currently looking at sennheiser HD500
I can get them for about 150.00 cdn...
Anything else worth considering?

I personally like Sennheiser's sound and comfort more than Grado's.
HD 600s are the best I've heard. My understanding is that 580s (and maybe 590s) are about the same sound for a better price.
Happy hunting.

Matt is correct in that the HD580 are extremely close to the HD600's in sound quality. They can be had for around $150 if you hunt some online (I paid this for slightly/lovingly used HD600's). I believe the HD590's are a variant and tonally differ from the 580's & 600's.
My other set of cans (which I often prefer) are AKG K501's (which I got brand new on eBay for $125). I find them to be more spacial and detailed than the HD600's. They also differ alot in the way they reproduce the bass end . . . they are not as dark and lack the 'boominess' of resonant bass response I find characteristic of the HD600. The AKG's still have excellent bass response, but it is much 'tighter' with more tonal characteristics.
I would recommend a good source as any defect will be revealed. Both of these will benefit greatly from a good headphone amp as well. Without an amp the AKG's will lack bass and the Senn's will lack detail, so you will not reap all the benefits that these superior cans offer.
You can always start out with the headphones and either build or buy an amp later . . . . even I can build one :o 8) ;D
You can read some reviews at Headwize Forum: http://headwize.com/ubb/forums.php
BTW: listening tastes vary widely and are a matter of personal preference . . . what sounds excellent to one person may be terrible to another.
Nothing beats listening to them yourself.

I would recommend the Grado's: http://www.gradolabs.com/frameset_main.htm
Some people complain about the comfort, but I haven't had any problems with them at all. In fact, they are very lightweight and comfortable for me. Sound quality is outstanding.

I got a good pair of phillips headphones at target for $9.99, I don't know the model number, they sound pretty good.
The most important feature is that when I break them in a month or two, I can go back to target and get another pair for $9.99.
I guess I don't qualify as an audiophile. Though you could probably tell that from my collection of 128kbps Mp3's.
;D ;D

I've got the cheapest Grados - the SR 60's. I think they sound fantastic.
They also work very well for listening to music on your PC or other non amplified source.
