Title: Media Center 11.0.72 Alpha Available
Post by: Matt on August 30, 2004, 03:10:21 pm
We're still working on Media Center 11.  We appreciate your feedback on it, but MC11 may not work as expected and we can't yet fully support it.  When upgrading from MC 10, you will lose your settings.  Some plugins still do not work.

We recommend that you use MC10 below, but if you want to use MC 11 while we're building it, PRICES are here:
http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?board=3;action=display;threadid=23311 (http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?board=3;action=display;threadid=23311)

If you want a more trouble-free experience, please download Media Center 10 here:
http://www.musicex.com/mediacenter/download.html

Media Center 11 is available here:
ftp://ftp.jriver.com/pub/downloads/music/MediaCenter110072.exe  [see price link above]

5. Changed: Revamped mode switching system / shortcuts.
6. Changed: Removed alpha timeout -- now offering Media Center 11 licenses.
7. NEW: Added "Toggle Theater View" shortcut to roll between Theater View and Full Screen View. (Shift+F11, also availabe in remote control command list)

11.0.70 (8/26/04)

1. Changed: Double-clicking a missing file to start playback silently starts the next file instead of showing an error.
2. Fixed: Some menu / action window actions like 'Build Playlist', 'Edit Selected Item', etc. would not enable, disable, and run as expected.
3. Fixed: Starting an external program with Theater View could cause a crash.
4. Changed: DVD video disks are now listed in a nicer format. A single entry per disk with the disk volume name as the title.
5. Changed: Next, previous, and reshuffle menu commands disable when there is only one file in Playing Now.
6. NEW: Added 'Controls' button to Theater View to access player controls from any screen.
7. Fixed: Search control would not properly handle manually typing in wizard type tokens.
8. Changed: MP3 plugin was using 1024 bytes in a kilobit instead of 1000 bytes, causing bitrates to be off a little.

Matt Replying to the new thread. I'm using Theater tek have been for a bit. Out of all the software players I used it's the easiest and has the best pic quality I've seen. I have never used the DVD ability in MC10 so I cannot compare. I've used it for Divx and other formats. THe ability of calling external programs is very greatly appreciated. I'll DL version 11 tonight and try it out. I'm mainly looking for a good front End for my theater that's easy to navigate with a Streamzap remote.

1. Configure Theatre View has gone
2. Doing anything in the controls menu takes MC out of focus and so you cant control it until bringing it back into focus.

It'll return to the right click as well.

I may miss something, but how do we add external programs or other web sites in Theater View? Do we have to edit the html files?

It is also not possible to switch between different Theater View Skins. It used to be some dark red (Acajou), now it is only a light blue one (Hairstyle?).

Whenever I start MC11 and move to Theater View, there is an error message that the current skin is not available.

Jaguu,

The XML schema for the main.xml has changed to a new version.  Just change the version number to 1.8 and add a <MENU> element (see the Hairstyle skin for a sample) to the old skins and you'lll be good to go.

Also while working with my CAD application which uses Direct 3D also in it's user interface, I noticed that when using the new Direct 3D menus, I would see the other application showing through.

Hi guys - a few more points on audio CD burning:

1) There should be an option to set the track boundary gap, if nothing than at least to 0 seconds (which I think it's at now) and 2 seconds (standard).  Setting on a track-by-track basis would be great.

2) There are two checkboxes for direct-to-CD decoding, one in the main burning options window, and the other under the DSP window.  Only the one on the main window seems to matter.

3) The documentation states that when you enable normalizing when burning, direct-to-CD is disabled.  However this is not the case.  It's real noticeable when you normalize and have tracks crossfade, as the rendered crossfade sections are normalized and the rest isn't.

4) I'd love to see the ability to set up profiles ("Standard CD", "Mix CD", "Mix CD w/ crossfade", etc.) so that you can preconfigure your favourite burn options.  As it stands, my wife wouldn't know how to set it up manually before every burn and make sure the options are set back after.

5) The strangest one.  If direct-to-CD burning is disabled so that the entire CD is prerendered, then once in a while, say every 3 discs, a track or two will burn with really odd behavior.  There may be an audio glitch ("bzzz!") within the first second of the track, and then the audio sloooooooooows down for 5-6 more seconds and slowly ramps back up to normal speed.  Weird!  I thought it was a burning issue but when I play back the burn cache file that resides in the temp folder, the glitches are present in the file.  I use lossless .wma almost exclusively so this may only happen when burning lossless .wma files with direct-to-CD disabled.  I haven't noticed it with .mp3 files yet.

In the meantime, until burn profiles ever show up and this funny behavior is caught, I've found that you can set up a burn queue the way you want and then drag/drop the entire list into a Nero session for burning w/ normalize, varying track gaps, etc.  So, thanks for the ability to drag and drop files from MC into other apps!

My thoughts:

1. With my remote (Streamzap) I can navigate through the menus in Theater View, but as soon as I get the new Control Menu and cancel out of it, I cannot control anything until I click on the Theater View background with my mouse. It looks like the focus doesn't quite go back to the Theater View.  In fact, this seems to happen even if I navigate with the keyboard arrow keys.

2. Play button on my remote no longer works in Theater View (It used to be equivalent to the space bar)   Instead, it drops out of Theatre View and starts playing whatever is selected in the Media View.

3. Most importantly, when playing a video from Theater View, the player jumps to Full Screen mode as expected. However, when I stop playback, it no longer jumps back to Theater View like it did in v10. I did check the  option in Theater View to bring the focus back.

4. You just have to bring back the "Back" button! Please! I'll even pay extra!  I have lots of videos and mp3s that I'm organizing into subcategories. I can't easily move around the interface anymore.

5. Can you possibly re-enable the old-style navigation where I could arrow left and right to move through levels?

Everything else seems to work great. I'm really excited about the new features. Keep up the great work.  Don't think I'm complaining! I still love this program.

Cough, cough.

I have been a faithful follower for a long time. Some have even called me a "sycophant".
And admittedly, it would stroke my ego tremendously if JRiver would consult me regulary about the way their company should be headed.
But the reality is that I have no stake in the company. If they depended solely on my occasional purchase of the latest Media Center, they would be doing very poorly indeed.
I have not invested huge sums of my time and my money in developing or marketing the product and I would gain not one cent if MC all of the sudden became THE player to have.
Consequently, I would lose nothing - not even my job - if JRiver tanked.

The same can't be said of JimH and the staff.

As long as I'm welcome, I'll stay on this ride, chip in a few bucks when necessary to keep any place on board this multi-million dollar machine and you'll still be able to pick the bugs out of my teeth (motorcycle reference).

Split views so you can look at two (or more) views at the same time (ex. look at Media Library and Playing Now together)

How do that?

Make sure you don't have a Resources.xml file in the MC\Data\Custom Resources folder.  We may need to add versioning to keep that from causing problems.

We'll fix / do the first 4 soon.  We're up in the air about #5 because we got quite a bit of feedback that this made using Theater View more confusing.

Thanks.

Wow, the video is a nice touch.

The see-through effect is due to the new view layout system in MC 11.  It still has a few kinks that we'll try to get ironed out in the coming weeks.

Thanks :)

No problem. There are only 3 programs I really get into.
1st - Datacad, my Architectual CAD software of choice
2nd - Media Center, gets me through the days and nights
3rd - Photoimpact, for editing images and such at a fraction of the price of Photoshop.

I will probably get more into Media Center's development stuff, it is the stuff of dreams when compared to all of the other crudware out there. So hopefully I can give a hand when I can. Thanks to all who have made it what is is today!

Yeah, that video is cool.  A picture is worth a thousand words, but a video is worth a million.  :)

Anyway, the point of my reply is that now that Matt has seen it, you may want to remove the link; otherwise, yo-yo's like me will keep clicking on it and eat up all your bandwidth.  :P

Note:

Don't know if tihs is a bug:

Tried to customize view of all Playlists by deleting the field "Rating" and told MC to save the view for all subsequent playlists. That does not work. Only the top Playlist group is changed.

It works in Media Library.

Can I mention again that the panes with grouping applied take up way too much space. And with the new autosizing of the panes they take up even more space.

1)  MC Freezes everytime I try to use Visualization Plugin. It then takes 100% of processor, I have to kill/uninstall the plugin.
Reinstaling doesn't help.

2) 3D visualization, when used in a second display (and only on a second display) is very slow. As soon as 1 pixel of the 3d visualisation area reaches the second display it slows downs from 30 to 1fps.

I'll return to olds video drivers, to see if it helps (if not, I'll post again with a screenshot of the classic visualization window, if I can take one)

This could be normal behavior depending on your video card.  Most dual-head cards I'm aware of do not accellerate direct3d on a secondary display, or if they do, they may not while the window overlaps both displays.  Are you sure it worked in the past?

Regarding visualization problems I have:
Downgraded my ati video drivers and it won't help.
I don't know if it can help, but you can have a look at what i've got when it freezes :

I started to really use dual display recently, so I don't know if it has ever worked.
You could be right... I though Gforce (which works fine) use direct3d acceleration, but it seems not to be the case.
Thanks for the hint, I'll search in this direction.
David.

[Edit]: Argh! You're right doug. Everything I put on the second display seems not to be 3d-accelerated.  :o too bad! (no thanks to ati)

It's now impossible to navigate Theater View with the keyboard :
I lose focus everytime a popup menu appears or when going from Home to any Item (Playing Now, Audio, Images...) or from any item to Home.

"Keep Focus (recomended)" is checked in Theater View Options.

Edit :  I now lose the focus only when I use a popup menu! (Now going from home to playing now (or something else) won't cause a focus loss anymore.)

I haven't done this in a while but in 11.0.72 rename files from properties is extreeeeeemly slow and spins the CPU at 100%.   This is on a rename to change directories on the same drive only so there should be no actual moving of files.   For 100 files it takes about a minute.

Hi there,

When installing Media Center 11, one mouse-click is detected as two, so I can't change the installation folder and the file-linking.

This is very annoying, especially since I de-installed the program and installed it again to see if it works then, but it didn't after four installations in total.

Does anybody have a clue why this happens? I never had such an issue on any other products including all builds of Media Jukebox and Media Center 10.

Since I want to install the program simply to Program Files\Media Center 11 with no JRiver subfolder, I hope somebody can help.

Thanks,

Mighty A-MAN

Carefully read the first screen of the setup program.  I think you want to choose something like: "Agree, but use custom options."

Matt was so right ...

Sorry, guys, it has been a hard day today, I hardly can just read the letters on the screen and it seems I did wrong what I did the right way hundred times before (or it used the option automatically on MC 10 after set the first time, I don't know, but at least I did something right back then).    ::)

My sincere apologies for a super-stupid question ...

Installed CDBaby service. When I click on the icon in the folder list, MC immediately crashes.

I can confirm this. Bug allready present in 11.0.70. It also crashes when clicking the installed Audio Lunchbox service.

The same for me.

Split views so you can look at two (or more) views at the same time (ex. look at Media Library and Playing Now together)

Can't use this since some builds back. Could use it in the begining.
I am not sure when I lost it though.

I just upgraded to v11 and I can not get my media server to auto start.  I can manually start it and it works fine.  If I restart my computer the server will not start.  Also windows explorer will open when I start with the C:\Program Files\J River\Media Center
dir open.  In there dir there is a data folder and a MJShellEXT.dll file.  I tried to uninstall it and reinstall but still get the same problem when I start the computer.  Any ideas?

Thanks,
Chad

Ok I got it working.  I just deleted that dir and now everything seems to work ok.  I guess that was left over from when I uninstalled 10.  Not sure why that messed up the server starting, but everything seems to work ok now.

I had the same problem:
Media Center 11.0.70 Alpha Available: MC doesn't like my "A Tribute To Ramones Album".
Eventually I found a way to fix the files. Foobar2000 has a tool: "Fix MP3 header...". It did the trick. I don't know what was wrong exactly or how it was fixed. MC 11 seems to be allergic to this kind of faulty files.

Is the media scheduler working properly?
I uninstalled v10 yesterday and it seemed to take media scheduler and the visualisations plugin of v11 out with it.

No problem, I thought, and reinstalled the latest alpha of v11. Media scheduler and my visualisations came back. Yey.

But the media scheduler was emtpy of its scheduled tasks. No problem. Just went to here (http://www.musicex.com/mediajukebox/DevZone/CommandLine.html) and pasted in the following rules:

Command name: Alarm Clock 1
Program path: mjextman.exe
Command line: TREEPATH=Playlists\Music\Alarm Clock

No problem. I thought. And went to bed. I woke up at 9 o clock this morning by a telephone call from my boss asking me i wasnt at work. Doh!!! Just 6 days away from achieving a 6 month perfect punctuality, fifty thousand yen bonus.

When i inspected my playing now in media center to see why metallicas latest ear bashing album (and the only thing that wakes me up) hadnt woke me, I found a that media center had put all of my songs in playing now starting with an episode of the simpsons which had hung because it is an asf file and media center cant play it. (media center is seeing lots of my video files as audio files at the moment). Hence the silence.

Lessons learnt: thouroughly test something if you will depend on it the next day.
Dont stop using a normal alarm clock. (well technically I did set my mobile phone alarm clock but I've got kind of used to turning it off subconsciously)

But so that i dont do the same tomorrow. Please could someone tell me if my commands are wrong or if there is a problem with the scheduler. it was working fine until i unistalled v10.

Also, if i set the scheduler to play a smartlist it also just puts all of my audio files into playing now.

Thanks,
Bri
Title: Real Player Files

Jim / Matt,

Very much loving 11, every new feature seems to beating all the competiton including the freeware / open source out there.

The only comment, sorry had to...  Is that for the past few versions can't play any real player files through Media Center.  I was hoping that after a few this would be noticied by yourselves and be fixed.  Web using real files seems to be working, just not local.  I have also checked that it is not real player by moving to real alternative, however same issue...

Sorry and Thanks.

I am still finding 'dropped files' from MC's "Rename from Properties" function.

1- MC will fail to make the requested tag / filename changes. Often the changes will show as if they were done, but upon a refresh they revert back to the original condition.

2- MC will rename / move most files as per the file & folder naming template, however others are left in their original location and become "Orphaned" or MIA.

3- These files will cause albums to appear as incomplete albums.

4- These files are then being missed during subsequent Imports, even though they are within the tree branches scanned for import and their filetype is checked to be imported.

5- Some of these lost files, upon being located (manually) and moved to their proper locations (using windows), will then Import, but refuse to be tagged, analyzed, played in MC.

(Most do however copy as real files in windows, take up an appropriate amount of disk space, and play in windows in spite of Media Center reporting them as mp3's with No Bitrate and No Duration.)

6- Some files have apparantly become corrupted somewhere along the way in the process as I did discover one or two that would not play elsewhere.

7- While hunting my library for missing tracks, I also discovered a goodly number of empty folders left by MC during previous "Rename from Properties" operations where a new folder structure caused files to be moved.

8- Clicking on "Update Tags from Library" after a change seems to help (although should not be necessary)

9- Sometimes the first time you click on "Update Tags from Library" it reports that there were several failures, however clicking it a second time ooften reports all updated sucessfully.

10- One album was placed inproperly, rather than: [Album Artist]\[album]\ this was placed in: [Album Artist]\[album]\[album]\[album]\[album]\[album]\[album]\[album]\.  Of course this showed in MC as a broken link (another MIA), even after I moved the files to their 'proper location' and did an import.  After a reboot they finally show correctly (without another import either).

11- When tagging on the panes/file window, at times (apparently when I press "Shift" to capitalize a word) the focus will jump to another tree branch losing your place.

All I can say for sure is that I currently have 11 Incomplete Albums which I did not have just a few days ago

Could any of this be related to the comment by Alex B regarding corrupted MP3 headeers??

None of this is easily reproducable as they do not occur always.

Can we get a function for "Remove Empty Folders ALWAYS"
and also have the Import function offer to also remove empty folders it finds along the way in addition to it repairing broken links as it does now?

I am aware that the above mentioned may not be the fault of MC11, however this seems like the best place to start.
Is anyone else seeing any of this?  I know Marko commented previously the he also experienced soem dropped files.

Start Media Center 11.0.72 and get message...
Failed to Create CD writer control (cdwriter.ocx).

Reinstalled 11.0.72 today and the startup error quoted above is gone. But one thing I did just notice is that the right click context menu is missing when I right click on files in explorer. Hope this is just still being reworked/changed and has not been removed. I used this all the time to import new/changed media or add to playing now and such. Or is this just missing on mine?

Bug:
Smart list content sometimes doesn't display even though contents are ok. Looks like a refresh problem.

Description:
I have a set of playlists where "Instrumental" is the base name of the playlist:
Instrumental - album list (single track from each album)
Instrumental - auto include full albums from album list (smartlist)
  Instrumental - exclude these singles
  Instrumental - include these singles
  Instrumental - complete (smartlist)

The "Instrumental - complete" (smartlist) contains:
Playlist: Instrumental - auto include full albums Not Playlist: Instrumental - exclude these singles Playlist: Instrumental - include these singles

This works fine and it displays the list correctly when created, but it shows an empty playlist when I select another playlist then re-select it. If I type something in the search field then erase the contents of the search field it displays the contents again.

Tangential explanation of the playlist setup:
This config is a bit complex but it gives me full control over the "Instrumental - complete" playlist. I can easily add a full album to the list by adding one track to "Instrumental - album list". If one or two tracks aren't instrumental then I add them to "Instrumental - exclude these singles". "Instrumental - include these singles" lets me add single tracks from albums that are mostly non-instrumental.

Have not managed to rip *A SINGLE CD* with MC11 weithout it crashing. some serious work reaquired here.

Also: Rported the prbolem with brackets () before which gets MC11 jumping around to a different view.

Even worse: If you try to to use the "&" seign or the paratheses themselves, MC 11 crashes alltogehter.

Hi guys - a few more points on audio CD burning:

1) There should be an option to set the track boundary gap, if nothing than at least to 0 seconds (which I think it's at now) and 2 seconds (standard).  Setting on a track-by-track basis would be great.
-Doug
You can adjust the track boundary gap by going into Options/Burn settings and then click the Settings button under "apply cross fade and DSP...". Now drag the gap slider to where you want it and leave the transition set at "standard".
Sorry you can't do it on a per-track basis. Can you give me an example of when this would be useful?

Thanks!
