I have quite a few videos encoded with Nero Recode v2.1 that have an extension of .mp4.
When I try to play them in MC10,161 I get the following error message:
Quicktime warning:
xxxx.mp4 is encoded using a MPEG-4 profile that Quick Time currently doesn't support.
MC10 locks up forcing a reboot to continue.
These files play perfectly in WinAmp 5 and WMP(classic).
Anyone have any ideas?

I'd like to bump this thread because this MPEG-4 encoded format is the best I've seen for creating video CDs (... even if encoding with Nero Digital should also imply playback is available via Nero Showtime.). My thinking was that it was MC's implimentation of Quicktime ... but surely, if Winamp can do it ...
J.R. ... what are the issues?
tia :)
EDIT: Just thought I'd add a review of this encoder:

What happens when you play these files directly in Quick Time?

Quicktime alternative says cannot render the file ...
-
Remove them from the library, change the extension to .mpg, and reimport.
Will MC play them then?
-
Try updating Quicktime.

Try updating Quicktime.
I did imagine quicktime alternative may not have been adequate ... and Apple's Quicktime 6.5.1 does imply MPEG-4 compatibility. However, before I install Apple's bloatware, I wonder if there is a method for adding the freeware version of 3ivx to MC10's (or MC11) recognition of available codecs(?)
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/3ivx.htm
Adding or installing individual codecs would seem a better generic way of adding future functionality. Or ... could individual codecs be made available from the JR download area as plugins?
Clout: Did upgrading Apple's Quicktime work for you??

Please try my suggestion listed above, as I think it may work.

It did not. Leastwise, I renamed it and ...
(1) tried to play it (open media file) ... and MC10 simply began playing a track in previous 'playing now'. MC gave me no messages ...
(2) Tried to import the renamed file, and MC implied it found '0' files (however scanned '1')

Set MC to use the Windows Media engine for video playback.
Then there should really be no way that WMP could play it but not MC. (assuming you're using the .mpg extension)

Found the switch ... but same as before (... wondering if Clout is experiencing the same(?) ...)

I posted this problem awhile back. I have the same problem. Mp4 files are a Nero specific file. As far as I know it has nothing to do with quicktime. It is a form of Divx (mpeg4) but has been modified by Nero to work only with the Nero player and is no longer a true mpeg4 file.
Would like MC to play them though. Have a few from playing around.
-
I had some .mp4 files. I could only get them to play in RealPlayer if I remember correctly.
-
hi
i also have plenty nero mp4 videos. they play with wmp10 or meedio + ffdshow without problems.
playing them with vlc (then no need for ffdshow) is also no problem.
but i canīt import them into mc10.173, neither can i play them with mc10. i renamed them to .mpg an selected "use wmp engine" - no change. :(
in order to build a video-library, the ability to import & play nero mp4 with mc10 is rather crucial for my.
is there any solution in sight?

uh, iīd really like to see a solution or at least an answer since my trialtime is running out.

Give MC11 a trial. This could be a problem with different Windows Media Player versions.
-
hi jim,
i gave mc11 a try. no luck aswell. mc11 ignores my mp4 (also the renamed mp4 with the .mpg ext.).
i canīt understand why. even wmp10 plays them - so why is that such a problem. :-(
please help.

chris,
Any possibility of getting one of these files to us to test?
steve @ jriver.com
-
sure. that should be no problem.
iīll just encode a small video and mail it to you.
chris
edit: the mail is on its way...
-
chris,
Thanks for the file. I cannot play the file in WMP or in Quicktime which explains our inability to import it. WMP says:
Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The file is either corrupt or the Player does not support the format you are trying to play.
Quicktime says:
File contains MPEG-4 technologies which Quick Time currently does not support.

steve,
thatīs correct.
qt isnīt able to play nero mp4 files - no matter what you do. (as far as i know)
but with wmp9/10 -> that depends on the filters/codecs you have installed. with ffdshow installed, wmp10 plays all mp4 files without an error.
with mc10/11 -> they donīt seem to care which filters i have installed. on import mc looks if qt can play it - if not = error = no import.
why doesnīt mc try to use the installed filters? imho who cares for qt on a xp-box?
zp i.e. has no problems with mp4 after installing the needed filters.
as i said: vlc, zp and wmp work fine. only mc (which is the most imprtant one) won't work.
i also have an 3ivx-encoded-file. 3ivx is not installed right now - all apps still play that file - mc throws out an "codec not installed" error. :-(
i would be very glad, if you could "boost" mc11s video-module a little to come near to the quality of the audio-part.
if i can be of any help (testing) - please just ask...
thanks

chris,
Try renaming the file extension to mpg and reimport it into MC. After you do this, MC will use WMP to play the file (not Quicktime) and if it plays in WMP, then it should also play in MC. Unless you rename the file, MC will try to use Quicktime to play the file which we know fails.

well steve,
changing the extention didnīt make it. still no go. nero seems to be quite a problem. (i would be nice if mc could start an external player like vlc for these files)
i guess i have to live with that. :-(
thanks
chris

... nero seems to be quite a problem. ...
If ffdshow is capable, it would seem MC would also be able to adapt(?)
:)
-
chris,
For what its worth, I installed ffdshow and still cannot play the file you sent in WMP with either the mp4 or mpg extenstion.
Steve

steve,
with ffdshow you should get video. with coreaac you get the sound.
that what wmp10 tells me, when i look at itīs setting with that movie.
