Are there any plans for FLAC support in MC11?
It seems odd that we can play a massive number of esoteric and propriety formats but not one that is open-source and becoming very popular.
I would love to see an official plug-in and would upgrade as soon as one was offered.
Thanks, Thomas.

I 2nd that motion... FLAC is really big on a number of legal trading networks for bands that fully support bootlegging. Not to mention livephish.com offers great flac files...
-
And the rio Karma supports it.
I second that, although I should know better after asking the same thing for as long as I have...
-
Personally, I have tried FLAC and find it to be a pain. I like and use APE format for lossless and MP via LAME for lossy.
Hmmm, how about becoming an evangelist for APE?
-
Because FLAC is pretty much the standard among lossless codecs. Show me a piece of hardware that supports APE. Monkey's Audio is a great format with a cool name and great tagging support but the simple fact is FLAC is the dominant format.
There is no good reason for MC not to officially support FLAC.
-
It would make life easier for me too if flac was supported.....

We'll add FLAC to the supported file types for MC11.
Oblong,
If you're reading, we'd like to package your decoder plug-in and make it available for automatic download when MC finds a flac file. OK?
Thanks for your feedback.

Nice, thanks! That means that MC11 will understand FLAC tags and everything?

I don't think so.
-
If I read this right, flac support will only be available via a plug-in. Will it ever be coded in MC?
I'm just curious...
Thanks.

Flac support will always be a plug-in and won't be part of the standard install package.

I have tried Oblong's plug-in with MC11 and it did not work - has something changed that makes the plug-in function now?
If so, I'm good to go but I would appreciate a definitive answer before I go through another upgrade-downgrade cycle.
-
It's working on the latest 11 build (76). At least it is for me.
-
Sorry - I meant build .77
-
Oblong's plugin (in_flac.dll) is the playback/tagging half of the equation. To rip to and transcode flac requires (short of monkeying with an external encoder option) enc_flac.dll, which has yet to be written.

How difficult is that?
I'm just curious -I doubt I have the skills to do it but maybe someone else here can?
-
Help me understand - why does MC not want to officially support Flac?

I would like to understand this too.

This statement seems so definite and final. What if FLAC becomes so widespread that it cannot be ignored?
