It seems that no matter what I try, I cannot get MC to play a Divx AVI, all it does is start playing and then crash. I have the DivX codec installed and it will play the file. The best I can get Windows Media Player to do is possibly play the file with that dern Divx watermark. Why can't I have MC use the codec that I want it to use? Help me please.

For the Divx watermark you could try this: Go to Start Menu -> Programs -> DivX Codec -> Decoder Configuration Utility -> Quality Settings -> Disable Logo.
For the other problems I don't know. My DivX works. You could unistall DivX and try this software:

FFDSHOW 2004-08-28
FFDSHOW is a DirectShow decoding filter for decompressing DivX, XviD, WMV, MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 movies. It uses libavcodec from ffmpeg project for video decompression, postprocessing code from mplayer to enhance visual quality of low bitrate movies, and is based on original DirectShow filter from XviD, which is GPL'ed educational implementation of MPEG4 encoder.
