Title: AVI playback problem
Post by: NickM on September 12, 2004, 10:57:50 pm
When trying to play a standard AVI file, MC reports no codec, attempts to download one and fails.  The error message suggests setting IE security lower to enable the download.

Having set IE security to the lowest, the problem remains.  MC10.155 and a vanilla machine without anything else apart from DIVX installed (DIVX plays back OK).

Has anyone encountered this before?  Thanks, nick

Try getting a copy of G-Spot, http://www.headbands.com/gspot/, and seeing what codec is needed, whether it's installed etc.

Thanks.  Got GSpot and it reports that the VAI file is MPEG.  How do you manually install ( or find for that matter ) a specific CODEC?

...a standard AVI file...

... AVI is a container format. Video & audio content that is compressed with a wide variety of codecs can be stored in an .avi file and played, if the appropriate codecs are installed on the computer.

Try this:

Does it say which MPEG?  If it's MPEG-4, that's DivX, which we already know is OK.  If it's MPEG-1 or 2, try changing the file extension to .mpg

I tried MPEG 1 and MPEG2 - same problems.  Tried renaming to .MPG - no help.  I asked earlier how to manually install the codec's?  I presumea question of copying dll's to some folder?
thanks, nick
