Title: Does volume leveling work with iPod?
Post by: JustinChase on September 20, 2004, 10:31:53 am
I'm getting ready to buy an iPod and am thinking I might buy the remote to control the volume while riding a motorcycle.  I'd really rather not spend the money to get the 'upgraded' headphones with the remote, and figure if I can just make sure that the iPod plays at a constant level, I won't need the remote.

Can anyone confirm of deny that this will work?

i have all my tracks analyzed for replay gain.  when i send them over to the ipod, i use the setting to apply replay gain, and i'd say  it works just as well as when playing back through MC.

you should, however, use the setting to add a fixed number to each song's replay gain during transfer value to keep the volumes from being too low when playing them back with the ipod; i use "10" and find comfortable listening volume to be at about half capacity.

Thanks for the info.

Does this work in v11?  Or do I need to do it with v10?

Cool, thanks Steve.

I ordered a 40gb iPod today.  is there anything i should know before I try to use it with v11?  Does the plugin for v11 work yet?

Thanks again!

Justin,

No plugin is necessary for MC 10 or 11. You should be able to plug in your iPod and go. You may want to read through the first post in the iPod thread here...

for some links to overview type information about using iPod and MC.

Anyone know if replay gain settings are retained when converting mp3s (I know I shouldn't, but I'm gonna) and apes.  I know MC can't analyze m4z files internally.  Is there some way to use the original settings with the converted files, if it doesn't carry through the conversion, which I'm guessing it doesn't.

I'm trying to figure out a way to current copy the library, then rename the files with the right path and extension info, so the library will not change, but will only point to the newly converted files.  I tried this once, and got some very funky results, many files in many places, some dups, some missing, very hairy.  i think I got it back on track, but I'm not sure how it got jazzed up in the first place.  I'll have to try with a smaller sample next time.

Anyway, how to get replay gain settings on the converted files is the main thing right now.

Justin,

Replay gain should transfer when you convert files presuming the filetype you are converting to supports replay gain. Please post if this is not working.
