Title: leading periods in file and folder names.
Post by: marko on October 19, 2004, 03:10:35 pm
Interesting!!

I use directory opus from gpsoftware here. I cannot remember the last time I ran windows explorer. (before using it just now for testing purposes)

Opus allows leading periods in file and folder names, and windows explorer handles the already existing files or folders with leading periods without a problem, but it won't actually allow the use of leading periods when renaming files and folders itself.

Curious huh!
I wonder what way round the bug goes?
Either way, I've switched to leading exclamation marks instead ;)

You can rename files to contain leading periods in a command window.  I have no idea why explorer won't let you.

thanks for that paulr :)

I got the impression it was a case of window's 'hand-holding' gone into overdrive as the error I got was along the lines of "you forgot to type a filename", rather than an "illegal filename" error.

I think you are exactly right.  It may have something to do with the ability to right click in a directory and create a new file of a registered type (e.g. .txt).  The fact that you can do it manually in a command window shows that MS wants people to be able to do it, but just not easily.

I discovered the command window trick when I was trying to create a .htaccess file when I was messing around with an Apache server.
