Title: TiVo Server
Post by: John Gateley on October 27, 2004, 03:27:00 pm
Media Center 11.0.112 introduces a new server replacing part of the functionality of Media Server. You can use it to share Music and Pictures with a TiVo, rendering them on your TV.

In MC, under the tree, under plug-ins, you'll find the TiVo Server plug-in.  Set the options here and "enable" it on the server machine.

It is strongly recommended that you choose "Convert Audio Content to MP3" here. The TiVo only plays a few media types.

This may be a little rough still, so please be patient.  But let us know what you think works well in the current implementation -- and what doesn't.

John I started up the TiVo server and get this:

10/27/04 21:12:01 - Starting...
10/27/04 21:12:01 - Trying Port 8070
10/27/04 21:12:01 - Creating new beacon
10/27/04 21:12:01 - Running on Port 8070
10/27/04 21:12:11 - Received a beacon request
10/27/04 21:12:19 - Received a beacon request

That's one beacon request for each time I select Music and Photos but the server doesn't list on the TiVo.

Hi Tim,

If you just want to get it running, try starting the original TiVo beacon (in services).

Otherwise, if you can wait til tomorrow, I'll get a debugging version to figure out what's going on. Can you report the version of the TiVo software running on the TiVo (not the desktop)?

Thanks,

j

Hi Tim,

I have the same version, so it's not that.

Try settings->control panel->Administrative Tools->Services
Search for TiVo Beacon, and right click then start.
Then stop and restart TiVo Server.
Let me know if it works.

Thanks,

John I don't see a search in Services (Local)  and alphabetically its not under T for TiVo Beacon.

I'm using XP Pro SP2

You've never installed the TiVo desktop, I think.  Our beacon should work.

Could you try setting the port to 8079 by hand in options, see if that helps?

Hi Tim,

I've made a debug version to help. Download:

www.jriver.com/~gateley/server_tivo.mjp
www.jriver.com/~gateley/server_tivo.zip

Make sure you save them in the same directory.
Double click on the mjp file from Windows Explorer.

Edit your registry and highlight
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\JRiver\ Media Center 11\TiVo Server

Click Edit -> New -> DWORD Value
Name the value Debug

Right click on Debug (the value you just created) and click on Modify.
Change the 0 to a 1.

Now start MC11 and TiVo Server.
Try to connect from the TiVo.
Copy and Paste the status page here.

Thanks,

j

Can you see "Music" and "Photos" in the HMO main menu?

Music and Photos is showing.

But something interesting just happened, I watched the screen and saw the correct items appear on the Music and PHotos menu and then flash away and disappear.

This is what MC said:

Ok.  I installed 113 and am using the autoport selection and have never installed TiVo Desktop.  When I  select Music and Photos, I see the manually added server I put in there 192.168.111.85 and then it flashes with the two menu options and then they disappear in about 1/4 second.  I am left with just the TiVo Online options for Best Buy, etc.

Here is the log from MC11 (113):

10/29/04 22:26:01 - Starting...
10/29/04 22:26:01 - Trying Port 8070

10/29/04 22:39:21 - Received a beacon request

I tried access several times as you can see.

TiVo Server is a replacement for Media Server.

I was hoping to write that it worked fine the old way, but in fact it crashed my Tivo!  I have never had that happen before.  I just recently upgraded to MC 11.0.127.  Hmmm.

Hopefully when my Tivo comes back up it will be more normal.

Just to fill in more details -- i am getting the same problem identified above with Tivo Server, my manual entry flashes for a second and then I am left only with Best buy or whatever.

[EDIT -- John, I found a Tivo developers document on the web.  From what I understand of their schema,

<TotalDuration>-1</TotalDuration>

should not be part of the menu specification.  That tag is used later for the Duration of a specific song but has no meaning for a menu.  Hope this helps!]

[EDIT --  Below is the Media Server problem, not Tivo Server]

Worse, when I turn OFF the Tivo Server and go back to Media Server which has always worked under MC10, it is not working.  It does give me Photos and Music and I can browse and play photos.  I can browse music but when I go to play a song it crashes my Tivo (which is very unsettling by the way).  The error message in the Media Server is:

11/13/04 21:41:20 - tcp_write failed error=10054

... and I forgot to mention how it looks on the screen.  I play a song and the little play icon is yellow instead of green and it does not move forward.  Then there are two loud, high pitched screeches that come out of my speakers.  Then the Tivo crashes and re-boots.

Geez.  I haven't even tried to play anything using the old Media Server, I just noticed that the menu items came up.  I also have added my Tivo server manually for what it is worth.  Maybe I'll turn off MC11 and remove it from the list and see what happens.

Ok.  Just tried that and nothing is detected manually.

I hope this gets looked at soon... i have had to reinstall 10 to allow my Tivo to access music, but I don't want to keep both a v10 and a v11 library up to date with new entries.

Hi Y'all,

I can't reproduce the TiVo problem here - is there anyone else who has it working, or am I the only one?

For those of y'all having the problem (it connects, but then the two entries for music and pictures disappear): Are you using a hand-entered IP address? If so, does the IP address reappear in place of the two entries.

Also: after it fails, in a command window on the server, do a netstat -an and copy and paste the result here please.

I am definitely working on it.

I do have a hand entered IP address.  After it flashes, there is nothing left except the Tivo supplied menu entries (i.e. Best Buy).  I can try the netstat thing at home later tonight.

Did you see my post above about the XML -- it looks like an extra tag being created by MC in the wrong place.  Any thoughts?

Same as RobOK.  I tried with both hand-entered and non-hand-entered.  The "non" doesn't find the server automatically.  Using hand-entered it fdoes the flashing thing.  I will try the netstat thing tomorrow when I get back.

Hello,

I am also having the same problem.  When using the Tivo plugin I've had to manually add the IP address on the Tivo as the auto-detection does not seem to be working.  I've used the auto-port selection (which uses port 8070) and I tried to manually specify the port (using port 8079) but in either case the server flashes only briefly on the Tivo screen before disappearing.

I am using MC 11.0.128 and a Tivo Series 2.  I have had this problem since the plugin was introduced.

Hi Y'all,

I think I've fixed the connect problem. It was one of those weird ones that by luck always worked on my machine, but not on anybody else's, which made it a little difficult to track down.

Look for it to work in the next build.

If you are impatient, you can install the TiVo desktop software and use their beacon (happens by default once it is installed).

The issue with the server disappearing was resolved with this patch, however I still have to manually add the IP address for it to see the server.  Auto detection is still not working for me.  I tried both auto and manual port assignment.

YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   SUCCESS!!!!

 :D   ;D

I noticed a couple of slight differences.

*  It says "Root/" on the Tivo menu screen.  Doesn't bother me.

*  On the menu, it is working slightly differently, instead of getting a menu with two items (Playlists, Music), i get playlists and then a list of Genres I think.  I have to look at it more to see what exactly is happening.

Thanks so much, made my day!

1. Error:  with a playlist of both images and songs (which I use for slideshows in MC), the images are shown in the Tivo list when only the music files should be shown.  Being the inquisitive type, I selected one of the images and hit play.  It promptly crashed and rebooted my Tivo.

2. Question:  It seems the only way to navigate is either Playlists or Genre/Artist/Album.  No other View Schemes are available to the Tivo, is that right?  Was that a conscious design choice or is that just how its working for now?

I'll work on Error #1.

For your second problem, richt click on the view scheme, choose edit view scheme, and then 'Show in Theater View", then it should show up.

cool, I never use Theater view....  I would never have guessed a connection between Theater View and Tivo Server, so you might want to consider a different way of showing that.

Thanks!
