Title: Media Server (v 10)

I am trying to use Media Server to listen to my home music library at work.  However, when I try and search for servers at work, it fails to find any.  What am I doing wrong?  I know that the media server on my home PC is running and in "shared" mode.  Thanks.

It's probably a firewall problem.  Try using port 80 on your home PC.

The problem could be on either side.

Try a search here for other media server problems.

"Search for servers" will not work across routers.

Instead, you must enter the IP address of your home server by hand.

Thank you for getting back to me.  How do I configure the port to 80?  And/or enter my home IP address?  Thanks.

To configure the port, just choose options and look under networking.

For your IP, it's a little difficult. How are you connected to the net? Do you have a fixed IP address from your ISP?

I am connected to the net through a cable modem. On my home computer, when I log into Media Server, there is an IP address at the top of the Media Server box.  Is this what you are referring to?  If so, how do I access it from a remote computer (e.g., across servers)?   :-\

Does the IP address start 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x ? If so, no it is not the right one.

I think most cable connections don't give fixed IP addresses, they change on occasion. This makes media server harder to configure, requiring a dynamic DNS setup (anyone post a pointer?).

I use DynDns.org for my dynamic DNS service.  It's free and there are several clients you can use to update it.  The client I am using it called DNSer - it runs as a service and picks up my IP address directly from my Linksys Router's status page.  It's a bit of a pain to configure, but it is hands free after that.

Zoneedit.com is another free service but it looks like all the clients they support are not free, although they are easier to setup (because the get your IP address from a website instead of your router).
