Title: Nero Fast CD Burning Plugin
Post by: lee269 on November 10, 2004, 12:26:45 pm
Re the subject - what is it? It appears under Drives & Devices in my install of 11.0.118.

I have a feeling I inadvertently clicked on Handheld Players in the Action window and somehow installed it. However it doesnt appear in the Plugin Manager.

I have it too.  It's a Window Media plugin installed by Nero 6 (see http://www.wmplugins.com/ItemDetail.aspx?ItemID=228 (http://www.wmplugins.com/ItemDetail.aspx?ItemID=228)).

I'm not sure whether it works in MC though  ?

It appeared to my MC11 too. I think it happened when I upgraded to Windows Media Player 10. (I don't have Nero 6, just an old 5.5x installation). I removed the item from MC.

Nope, it's installed two ways:

1) By downloading the free plugin via www.WMPLugins.com (a Windows Media Player site) or direct from www.nero.com - it gives WMP9/10 more advanced burning capabilities.

2) By installing Nero 6.x as it's there by default.

The first method can be easily un-done by removing it from Add/Remove Programs.  The second method is harder since its under the envelope of the Nero 6 install.  So to get rid of it from a Nero 6 install you have to download the plugin separately from www.nero.com, install it, and subsequently remove it.  After a reboot it will no longer show up in MC.

The plugin must register itself as a virtual WMDM device or something, and MC happily picks it up.  No harm, but it's annoying in the list.  SteveG, maybe you can filter it out?

Thanks for the info. Now Im confused, though.

1. I have definitely not intentionally downloaded it from either of those 2 sites. I have never visited www.WMPLugins.com, and I cant remember the last time I looked at the Nero website.

2. I have Nero v5.5.10.56. I havent upgraded it recently, or even used it in the last few months that I can remember.

3. It (the plugin) doesnt appear in my list of installed programs.

4. I played around a bit and discovered something else: in MC, if I click on Handheld Player in the Action window, I get a box above the action window for this plugin. It has one button labelled 'Synchronise' and an area for dropping files into. Right clicking on the plugin window and choosing options gives me an MC dialog labelled 'Handheld Options'. It contains the same controls as the handheld options in Tools/Options.

I cant figure the 'CD burning' thing with the 'handheld' thing. It feels as if something is wrong. However from the replies it seems to be benign, so no worries.

Like Doug, Im hoping SteveG can clear this up for me. You there, Steve?
