Title: Hating MC 9.1 right now
Post by: mattsnuts on November 11, 2004, 07:00:35 pm
just lost 1500 song ratings which took me over a month to rate, when Syncing with my ipod.

Furious

I'd sync'd many times and the ipod itself knew all the ratings, then when I sync'd back to MC with changed ratings, evidently something messed up.

Library backup?

Nup.

It's hard enough trying to keep 3 copies of the same mp3s in sync - home, work and ipod.

I had 100% ratings done at work and on the pod, but it seems the pod ratings were in the DB of the pod, not the file tags of the mp3s on the pod.

Either way, this shouldn't have happened - no files got overwritten, I did a sync with Sync data to MC checked - I shouldn't have lost anything.

It's good to make it a daily practice of library backup. I do it at least once per day, and anytime I make bulk changes to my DB.

It's extremely simple as well.

File - Library - Backup Library

Click OK

Done

It's instantaneous. It backs up all of your library tags and settings. Absolutely invaluable.

I once suffered from a setback such as the one you had, only mine was for about 5000 songs and their genre tag. Library Backup became almost a religious ritual after that.

I wonder if they can set up something that you can do auto back ups... An option to update daily, weekly, monthly?

MC 11 does make an automatic backup every time you do an import / synchronize of your library.

It should be quite easy to create a .bat or .cmd file that will back up your library by simply copying it to another drive/directory.  Then you can use Windows Task Scheduler to execute the file as often as you like.  I've no idea how to write dos scripts so perhaps someone here could post the details.  If it's possible to .zip it at the same time that would even better.

And it would be good if it's possible to set it up so it will create n backups before overwriting the original ones.

Hi Matt,

I understand that it will do that on import, But not everybody imports new material Daily.
I think something like this would have saved Mattsnuts a lot of grief....

Cobian Backup (http://www.educ.umu.se/~cobian/prog.htm") is a very nice freeware backup that will do everything that's been asked for.  It's just been updated to V6 so I can't comment on its reliability etc, but V5's been well nigh faultless!

I second this.... and do it even if i make tag changes.

i usually keep at least 5 rpevious copies (on a different parition) to the one that MC is on. Its become a habit now...backup library before shutting down MC.
