Title: Genre's
Post by: krdavies on November 21, 2004, 05:33:32 am
I recently purchased Media Center and am very pleased with what it can do. So far I only have one problem. Having ripped my CD collection and had Media Center download info from CDDB I now have about 30 genre's to select from, many of which are exactly the same other than capitalization, spacing or punctuation.

Is there any way to edit this list or remove some of the options?

Many thanks

Ken Davies

Media Center download info from CDDB

media center does not download info from CDDB

you can Select the Files You Wish To Edit And right Click on the col you wish to edit, when a menu comes up then click on the item called something Like "Edit"

you can then edit that field for all selected files.

or if you click on each file field 2 times (slow) you can edit just one field.

Sorry, I should have been a bit clearer. I want to reduce the number of genre's from 30 to around 10.

Sorry, I should have been a bit clearer. I want to reduce the number of genre's from 30 to around 10.

Use the Library Browser.
For any genre you wish to change, just click the 'files' link in that genre.

Now select a song. Press Control-A. All files should be highlighted.

Click File Properties in the Action Window in the lower left of the MC window.

Now click Tag Info

Change the genre to whatever you like. This will be applied to all selections you highlighted.

Repeat for whichever genres you dislike.

It's pretty easy.

List all the songs in your library, click on the "Genre" column at the top of the View. That will sort all your songs by Genre. Then, let's say you want to convert all songs that are presently tagged as "Acoustic Rock" to "Rock", you would select all the songs that have the genre set as "Acoustic Rock" and chage the genre to "Rock" in the File Property Action Window.

Once you make the change, Acoustic Rock would no longer be in your database.

Michel.

That also works well... :-)

You can also use the Tree View.  Create a "Genre/Artist/Album" view scheme (I think there is one by default) and make sure Populate Tree is selected in the "Edit View Scheme" dialog.  Then you can navigate through the tree (the pane on the left with the + boxes) and just Drag/Drop the Artist or Album you want onto the Genre you want.  Select "Move" when the Copy/Move/Cancel dialog comes up and there you go!

This is great for organizing large numbers of files at once.  If the Genre you want isn't in the list (it only lists ones you already have in your database) then just give one file the Genre and it will appear.  You can then drag-drop the rest!
