Hi,
I request that "control+clicking" on any value in any of the panes allows that value to be highlighted without the other panes being cleared, regardless of whether it is right or left of the currently rightmost highlighted pane.
This would not confuse newbies as it requires knowledge to do anyway, and would be really useful for me as I often click on one pane and then realise I also want to filter using one lower in the stack. The auto clearing is a pain.
Hope this gets in.

I vote for that.

Ctrl+Click is how you multi-select, so we can't kill that.
Can you give an example of what happens that you don't like?
-
clicking on a pane left of the currently selected pane will clear all panes to the right of it. I often (especially with images) seclt one of the panes and then realise that i also need to select one of the earlier ones. Control clicking would still allow multiple selections, and it would be cool if it had the added ability to not auto clear the panes to the right.

Then how would you multi-select AND clear the panes to the right?

I have wanted this since i got MC. Deffinetley needs to be added. The problem it solves is that i always have to customize current view which takes several clicks to change the pane orders. Now it doesn't matter what order it is in, since the user can choose on the fly.

to clear the panes to the right just click in the blank space in any of the panes to the left. Or dont multiple select (dont hold control) when you click on a pane to the left.
Anyway, how often would you really have to multiple select and clear panes at exactly the same time. My suggestion would give you the same behaviour when not control clicking, and I think, would be soooo much more convenient that the problem you mentioned would be worth the sacrifice.

It would have to be done with a key combination other than ctrl+click.
Youre asking them to change the function of a global key combination. It's not that its difficult, but its just not common sense, I would say. That would be the equivalent to asking them to change the "Enter" button into the "Tab" function.
I would imagine, and quite correctly at that, that if they changed that particular key combination, there would be a lot of pissed off MC users.
Good suggestion, just bad choice of key combinations.

I agree with the proposal that order of selecting the entiries should not matter. You may have multiple panes that you don't always prioritize. Sometimes you know the artist better, some times the album, sometimes the genre.
I know the argument that a more tree like approach (reseting) is better for newbies (I am not sure that I agree with this), so an advanced key combination for not reseting would be cool. (I don't think ALT is used while clicking on the panes, how about that?)
Alternatively, how about a key combination that toggle between two modes? (reset the right panes, or don't). There should be a visual indicator and mouse click location too, to do that manually. It maybe a feature turned-off by default until we get positive feedback, and for backward compatibility.
