Can MC be used to broadcast via Shoutcast or is Winamp the only option?
-
Yes, it is possible.
You need:
1 MC
1 Winamp (preferably 2.9x, but 5.x is possible too)
1 Shoutcast source plugin for Winamp
1 Shoutcast server
If you are familiar with Shoutcast server the rest should be quite easy. Instead of playing files directly from Winamp the Shoutcast plugin for Winamp is configured to input the audioline from the soundcard. Then it will stream whatever you play with MC.
I use that quite often for streaming the output from one PC to other PCs in my home LAN. It is a pity that the receiving PCs cannot be synchronized. In different rooms the output is not exactly simultaneous.

i have never got shoutcast to work on winamp

Alex B is correct.
You have to use 2.x or 5.x. Otherwise it won't work. Especially not with 3.x. Works for me quite a long time now.

I have this configuration:
Winamp 2.95 & SHOUTcast Source v.1.8.2b plugin
Winamp preferences > DSP/Effect > SHOUTcast Source:
Output
Output 1: selected
Connect: connects the SHOUTcast server (running locally)
Connection:
> Address: Localhost
> Port: 8000
> Password: your choice (needed to connect the server)
> Encoder: 1
> Automatic reconnection: ticked
> Timeout: 30 s.0
Yellowpages: not needed, you can experiment
Encoder
Encoder1: MP3
Encoder settings: I use 320 kbps
Input
Device: Soundcard Input
Settings: 44100 Hz, Stereo
Soundcard Mixer: locked
SHOUTcast Server 1.94
Only the correct password must be set in "SC_server.ini"
- In my case the clients use this local address: 192.168.0.xxx:8000.

Thanks for the imput guys I'll give it a try, be much easier if the powers that be would just make media server do a push instead of a pull, I really just want to stream locally.

... be much easier if the powers that be would just make media server do a push instead of a pull, I really just want to stream locally.
That would be nice. Though I think the synchronizing problems would be present also with MC because it uses network packets for transferring. They are not accurate like a signal traveling in an audio cable. Also soundcards' latency times differ.
-
yeah that's what I'm afraid of, one of the things I've been thinking about getting one of those wireless network servers, but I'm not sure if they "push or pull"

If I understand correctly, though, in shoutcasting via this method, the listeners will hear every beep and boop on your computer... everything that's going through your sound card... not just the music.
The nice thing about shoutcasting directly via WinAmp is that you can broadcast ONLY the stuff being played on WinAmp.
Or am I missing something here?

It will broadcast everything you hear locally. Though you can have more soundcards and send the Windows system sounds to another soundcard. You can also turn them off.
The idea is to be able to use MC library as a source for obvious reasons. I don't see any need for hearing the system sounds when having e.g. a whole house party.
The nice thing about shoutcasting directly via WinAmp is that you can broadcast ONLY the stuff being played on WinAmp.
It is also possible to export MC playlists to m3u format and play/broadcast the playlists directly with Winamp & SHOUTcast if all the needed file formats are supported in Winamp and its installed plugins.

does anyone know if you can do this in a computer without a sound card? (like my server) is there any "virtual sound card" software you can use.
i like the idea of just remote controlling MC and streaming through the web.
-
the machine that is running shoutcast dsp and winamp does not require a soundcard, though it's nice to have one to preview what's going on.
I just leave the speakers turned off and press their power button when I want to make sure it's still working correctly. I have it running on a box with no monitor screen and control it via VNC.

maybe i dont understand your post: but i have one machine that has MC, winamp and all the soutcast software on it. This machine doesnt have a sound card. i want to stream the output from MC to shoutcast. In the winamp shoutcast dsp plugin i can select winamp as the source, or the line in from my soundcard. So i choose line in and i dont hear anything because i dont have a sound card. I was wondering if there is software to make a "virtual soundcard" . like when i use a remote desktop connection it installs a sound device that i can see in media center.

Here's an alternative solution using library server and netremote (http://www.promixis.com)
http://www.promixis.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=8968
It uses netremote to control MC and uses a netremote plugin modified from GSPLAYER (http://hp.vector.co.jp/authors/VA032810/) to stream the actual track that MC is playing from the library server. (so no extra streaming server software is needed)
This works for both pocketpc and pc
If you set up a special zone in MC for the streaming (I can set up 3 zones on my single 5.1 sound card. Just use a spare one, you don't need to connect speakers ) then you can still play a different track on the MC pc and on the remote pc/ppc.

Not that I know of. I run 2 separate machines. MC can't send output to the shoutcast dsp directly, only winamp can. To stream from MC, you definitely need a souncard. There's a detailed thread on exactly how it needs to be set up here:

What I do is have MC on main pc A. When I import a bunch of new music, I then go to File>Export All Playlists.
I then have 1 batch file for each playlist that simply loads the playlist into Winamp on pc B when I want to change the theme.
PC A has a soundcard so I can listen via pc speakers or line out to the home theater receiver.
PC B is dedicated to shoutcast streaming and has no sound card.

Google gave me this: http://www.realvnc.com/pipermail/vnc-list/2001-August/024798.html
and this: http://www.ntonyx.com/vac.htm
and this: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=87107
... seems to be interesting, but I don't have time to try that now.

Hmmm... that points to this thread. :)

The theme to this thread (being as I started it) was to find a simple way to do a shoutcast type of broadcast over your LAN.

Thanks for your tip. Looks like I found something I was searching for in the last few months.

excellent!
Thanks Alex.
that works perfectly. MC is playing, using Virtual Audio Cable as the sound device. And winamp and shoutcast is streaming it.
