Hi,
I'm pretty new with MC; currently running 10.0.155.
I have a playlist worth of tracks on my HTPC in .ape format that I want to copy / synch with another p.c. on my home network (the htpc sees the shared drive of the other p.c.) and convert to a lower mp3 bitrate at the same time.
Can someone tell me if it's possible and if so, how I would go about this.
Thanks,
David

David,
See if you can transfer a file without conversion first. If that works, if you click on 'Options' in the Action Window, you can enable file conversion during the transfer.

Steve,
Thanks.
I can copy the file via Windows, but not through Media Center (assuming I'm even attempting to do it the "right" way in MC). If I right click on the playlist or even an individual track in the playlist, the Send To command doesn't see the shared drive. Likewise, MC doesn't see the shared drive as any type of handheld / portable.
Am I even attempting to go about this the right way? :)
Thanks,
David

Likewise, MC doesn't see the shared drive as any type of handheld / portable.
If you go to Tools / Options / Handheld you should be able to define your shared drive as a handheld. Once that's done you should be able to synch your playlists to the share. You can define conversion on the fly options in the same place.

Ian,
Thanks much .... I'll give this a try when I get home today.

Ian,
I assume I have to be missing something very simple.
If I go to Tools > Options, I get a selectable list of CD Write, Devices, Encoding, File Associations, etc; but no Handheld.
The only reference I see to Handheld in my MC version is under Devices, I have "Handheld Players" at the bottom of a dialog box with "Enable Support for WMDM devices" under the heading. But, it seems to be "inactive" (can't do anything there).
Feeling not very bright right now :-[
Thanks,
David

Hello,
I'm not certain if that function is in MC 10, but in any event, you should upgrade to the latest version of MC 10.
It's here, I think:

I'm sorry to mislead you like that - I didn't notice you were on V10! It's easy to do what you want in V11, but I don't know if it's even possible in V10.

Ian / GHammer,
Thanks for the help. Looks like this functionality was not available in version 10, but does appear as you describe in v11 that I downloaded a couple of hours ago.
Unfortunately, I'm having a problem that a forum search says may be familiar to GHammer.
If I click Handheld in the Action window and drag either a track or short playlist to it and initiate the transfer I get the following:
If I have conversion turned off and am therefore transferring an .ape file(s), the dialog first reports how many files are in the handheld queue and their total size. After clicking OK, I immediately get "Out of Memory Upload Aborted".
If I have conversion turned on to mp3 vbr, it appears to be transferring the file fine, incrementing the % as it progresses, but after hitting 100%, I then get "Out of Memory Upload Aborted.
If it's a short playlist with conversion turned on and I hit cancel after the error message, it starts the next track, moves to 100% and errors again.
I definitely don't have memory problems on either machine. Can anyone help point me where to look?
Thanks,
David

The error you are seeing is a plugin related problem. It was worked on for MC 11, John may be able to tell you if the new plugin is available for MC 10.

I upgraded to 11.0.140 yesterday to get the Handheld (network drive in my case) / Transfer capability, which is the version I'm currently getting the errors with.
Thanks,
David

David,
I am not sure what the problem is. I will look into this soon.

Thanks Steve.
I'm new with this, so here's a couple of additional pieces of information in case I'm missing something simple.
I defined my shared drive in MC by going to Tools > Options > Handheld and entered a path of \\Study\Temp Music.
Even though I've done this, each time I go into MC and click on Handheld in the Action Window in an attempt to copy a track or playlist, I get "MC has not stored file information for this device. This may take serveral minutes, but will be required only once ........"
Thanks,
David

David,
I'm just guessing, but you might try setting up the remote drive as a mapped drive in Windows Explorer, and then MC will see it as a drive on the local PC.
-
Jim,
That seems to have moved me further along.
I'm no longer getting "Out of memory Upload Aborted"
I get a dialog box to "Confirm Start Handheld Transfer" to which I say "Yes". I then get a dialog for "Handheld Error" which contains text of "Transfer Error".
I'll search the forums for that, but am open for suggestions :)

Jim / Steve,
Thanks for all the help. After Jim's suggestion to move from Universal Naming Convention (could not get UNC to work) to a mapped drive, I got on the right track.
I tested transferrig to another drive on the same machine and it worked. This let me zero in on a permissions problem I had with the HTPC not being able to write to my shared drive. Once that was corrected, everything works great.
I love the functionality you guys are putting into MC 11!
Thanks again,
David
