Title: CD Ripping - Why it is so slow....
Post by: ZaxonXP45 on October 01, 2003, 01:20:25 am
Hi all,

I try to set up the MP3 encoding to VBR, more less, using the same parameters which I'm using in the Audiograbber, but whatever combinations of the options I used the result was the same: time of the encoding for Audiograbber was ~2x FASTER!!! :(

Can somebody enlight me why Media Jukebox 8 is so slow?  ?
Will it be improoved soon?

Regards,
Zaxon

Most likely it is because each program uses a different MP3 encoder. I'm not sure which encoder Adiograbber uses, but MJ uses the LAME MP3 encoder. LAME is generally considered to be the highest quality MP3 encoder, but it is slower than most others, especially when encoding in VBR.

The other possibility is that in Audiograbber, you were ripping in "burst" mode and you have MJ setup to rip using Digital Secure mode.

The Audiograbber uses also the Lame encoder. Look here:
 http://www.audiograbber.com-us.net/mp3settings.html

This is why I'm wonder why the MJ8 is slower than Audiograbber.

Maybe you are right about settings in the MJ8, but currently I'm not sure what to set to have maximum speed in the VBR mode using Lame codec. Can you tell me what I supposed to set?

Thanks in advice!

I have to return a honour to the MJ8.  :)

I made some comparision between MJ8 and Audiograbber. Ripping to WAV the 4m15s long song takes for A 24s and for MJ8 33s, which is not so bad assuming that the initialisation process might be longer.

Ripping and encoding to MP3 format takes 64s for A (MP3, Lame 1.32, VBR4, Method: New) and 87s for MJ8 (VBR, Normal, Quality: Normal), but the output file was 200KB smaller for MJ8. :)

In this case I can wait little longer it it saves some space. :)
