Just discovered that if you open a windows xp remote desktop connection to your computer that plays media center, it streams the music pretty well.
i have alot of APE files and it plays those with no skipping, so it must be encoding the music.
I have cable modem with a modest upload (i think 256k) and it sounds decent. So i open an RDC session make sure that the RDC mixer is un muted, minimize the window and open a browser to the web remote (so i can control playback) and stream away at work.
kinda stupid way to do this but it works!

I also would check out Grouper. http://grouper.com/ . It's actually set up for a private network for music, video, pictures, & file tranfers but it also has a really cool way to stream your music. It also steams it at 31k no matter how you have your music files saved so it shouldn't be a bandwidth problem.
Hope this helps,
