Title: Media server 11 - client tagging?
Post by: grahamk on December 16, 2004, 08:11:36 am

With media server in version 11, are clients allowed to change mp3 tags?

If not, are there any plans to allow this?

Thanks,
 Graham

In MC11, Library Server will replace Media Server.  Functionality is almost identical.

But the library being served is still read only.  No current plans to change.

Jim,
I would be super great if one could edit tags! And automatically upload to server. At some point a J River person (PeterR maybe?) talked about maybe imply it where only one user could make change at a time. That would work. Please consider it. It would be a biggie.

Adding that functionality would be extremely valuable for me - a long time Media Center buyer and evangelist. :-)

Count me in also.

It seems that I am always updating the tags as I'm listening to music. Or creating/modifying playlists.

This is the main reason I hardly use Media Server. And I really want to use Media Server on my home network. It would make my life so much easier...

Merry X-mas!

Michel.

I add my support for this.  High on my wiish list.  Even if you could make the "server client" read only while the remote client was doing updates -- ie. they dont have to BOTH be updating at the same time.

Another "me too."  I have Media Server running on my file server, but I do all my ripping and tag editing on my workstation (saving the files to storage on the file server).  It's a pain to have to go to the server, fire up MC, and import all the new tracks, after every ripping session, or to do an Update Library after an editing session.

Of course, if it was possible to update the library via Media Server, I would want to see that protected somehow, possibly via another level of passord authentication.

I've given up asking for this functionality after about 2 years...

This feature has been asked for a long time. I think the suggestion that one client be able to update at a time sounds reasonable. Whether that client is on the same machine as the server or on the network should not make a difference.

I think the problem is the proprietary database MC uses is heavily optimised for client side interaction with no support for transaction handling and will most prolly require a rewrite at some basic level. Didn't they do that already for v11.

I use MC on my media server, but both server & worstation are next to each other. This is unlikely for lots of ppl where the server usualy gets tucked in a closet or is in the basement. Which leads to unwieldy workarounds, sharing network folders (which leads to longer response times due to the to&fro over the network). Desktop sharing the server machine might be a better option.

At the very least, it would be nice if Media Server would update the last played timestamp and played count for each track it serves up to a client.  If you only ever listen via the server, then the "not heard recently," "top hits," etc, smartlists become useless as it keeps serving up the same files every time.  (Unless I'm missing something, of course.)

This precisely what I want -  for Media Server to merely update the date/time/number of plays. Most of my listening is done in the lounge via Media Server. I never have any idea what gets played when / most etc. as all stats are lost when lounge PC is shut down. I'm not interested in kludgey workarounds either, so don't post any.

Doesn't sound like a huge ask, but it's been fobbed off for as too difficult for so long now, I give up.

It's more important to include such tools as management for PDF files, and MS Office documents...etc.

bah humbug!

bah humbug!

Merry Christmas Scrooges :)

The next release of MC11, coming out this afternoon I hope, will update playcounts and last played fields for Library Server, TiVo Server, and UPnP Server. (It has been difficult to implement, and is one of the reasons we switched from the old Media Server. I've been meaning to do this for a while, but the UPnP stuff had priority).

Way to go!

If this works as well as I know you can make it work, John, it just might make me upgrade to MC11...

Nice present from Uncle Scrooge...
