Title: Libraryproblem after re-installing XP
Post by: retro on December 24, 2004, 04:45:49 am
Hi all..!

I'm a complete noob at MC and would be glad if someone could help me out.. :)
I've searched the forum but with no luck.

I have installed the trialversion of MC10, works very nice..no more winamp for me.. ;)
I ripped about 30-40 cd's to wav-format to my E-drive, getting a very nice library with everything perfectly sorted by album, artist, genre, cover-art and so on..my satisfaction was perfect.. :)
But, before ripping the rest of my cd-collection, 700cd's, I thought I might as well do a complete re-install of Win XP to get a nice, clean, fast pc again..
So, I formatted and re-installed XP on my C-drive, then installed MC10. No problem. But when I scanned my e-drive to get to my previous ripped cd's, the libraray only shows the "Name" column..such as "Dire Straits-Brother In Arms"..nothing showing in Artist, Album, Genre etc..

What am I doing wrong or is it something obvious I'm missing here..how do I get back the nice, detailed library..?!?
Hope I don't have to rip the cd's all over again..especially since I have a habit of regularly reinstall Win XP on my pc..

I'm sorry if this has been discussed before, but I couldn't find it..

Heelp.. :)

You are probably out of luck.   You say you ripped your CD's to uncompressed WAVE files.  (Why?  You should use, at the very least, APE compression.  It's lossless and will save you half the space.)

Anyway, unless you made a backup of your library (via File --> Library --> Backup Library...), then you probably lost all your tagging info.  Since wave files don't contain tagging info, it is simply stored in your library.  If you format your drive and start with a new library, then, well, your tagging info will be gone. :(

You won't need to rerip, but you will need to manually retag everything.

Now, had you ripped in APE format, then the tagging info would have been in both the library and in the files themselves.  ;)

Thanks Omni..I thought that might be the case..

So, if I regularly back up the library to the harddrive where I have stored all my cd's, then I can always re-create the library structure even after a re-install, right..?

Yes, I know I can save some space by compressing, but in my system and with the soundcard I have (LynxTwo B), WAV clearly sounds better than APE..lossless or not.. ;)

Well, now its time to start rippin again.. ;D

WAV and APE send the exact same data to the sound card, King is right.

And why are you constantly re-installing XP??

I didn't wrote constantly, I wrote regularly.

As for APE sounding the same as WAV..in theory, I know it should..but my ears don't care..ok, I wrote clearly, lets back that down to slightly.. ;)
But I'll check my settings and give APE another try..
