Title: Problems synching a 4G iPod
Post by: benrad on January 24, 2005, 09:35:58 pm
I'd been sailing along pretty smoothly until just recently with build 179. I use the patented "Larry" method for synching both my 3G and my GF's 4G iPod. I'd been synching mine a lot recently and hadn't done hers in about a week. I connected it tonight and all I get after MC detects the iPod is a blank dialog box and no access. I'm unable to do anything with it. It has NOT had any contact with iTunes in about a month. I disconnect it, and then disconnect my 3G iPod and everything works fine. Any ideas?

Thanks

Have you tried re-initializing her iPod? (rt click, select initialize)? That might do the trick, but it'd be bad if you had to do that every time you switch iPods. But if I've not synced one in awhile, this often does the trick.

I can't even bring up the right click menu. I get anywhere near the "iPod" expandable, and it gives me the red X no text box.

Are you sure the iPod is being detected by the computer?

Is it in the proper mode (that is, NOT hard drive mode)?

Does iTunes detect it?

The last resort is always to reformat, but I'd try to see if it comes up under iTunes first, just to narrow down the problem.

Yes, the PC can see it, and I can access all the files via Explorer.

The last time I had it hooked up to iTunes, it worked (I used it just once to transfer the license file onto the iPod).

I was going to do a reformat, but was avoiding it.

benrad,

If you do not mind possibly losing the files on your iPod, try finding the iTunesDB file on the iPod and delete it. Then, access the iPod via MC and if you get past the crash, do a right click on iPod and do a 'Rebuild database'

Steve,
It shows up in the tree looking just like my 3G iPod. I'll try this out in a few and let you know.

I had to reformat and then set her 4G up again and it synched OK.

Now I just connected my 3G and MC has been "analyzing devices" for about 5 minutes.
