Title: Following JimH's advice - Infinite loop problem!
Post by: Jaguu on January 26, 2005, 05:27:08 pm
Following JimH's advice I made a search on Google for Nvidia driver instability and came up with a very common problem, the so called "Infinite Loop" problem that is causing many crashes and reboots.

I discovered that I could play  a playlist for 3 hours without problem, when not in playing now window, but a few minutes playing with visualisation on caused a system reboot. This could be reproduced several time. So it might be that J River is right and some problems are not related to MC11, but to this widespread problem that seems to occur only with Nvidia drivers.

Is there anybody on this forum that had this problem and how is it best solved?

Well, it's good to know we're off the hook.  It's really hard for software problems to cause a reboot -- except maybe for shoddy DirectX programming. (since DirectX talks more directly with the hardware)

One solution would be to use "Cover Art" instead of visualizations.  You could also switch the 2D visualization draw method and see if it changes anything. (standard vs Direct Draw)

Otherwise, have you been looking for an excuse to get an ATI X800 ;)

Maybe switch to ATI? :P

I am not a gamer, the only graphics I use are the MC visualisations and/or Gforce! So there is probably no need for an X800.

There seems to be a problem with ATI too. Thread: http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=25673.0

I think that's a relatively new and unrelated problem.  We're still searching for the answer to that one.

Maybe this is the right place to ask.

Is there a graphics card that does all MC has to offer without the above mentioned problems ? I only use the cover art visualization but wonder about the rest ;)

I dont play much games, unless we refer to MC as a game :)

Hi marko,

thanks for your advice. My Nvidia drivers and Hyperion 4in1 driver for the VIA chipset were quite up-to-date. In any case I updated both of them to the newest release and set my Bios settings quite defensive. But the problem still persisted.

Following the line discussed in the thread about "MC11 hanging with visualisations" I tested with dll's from version 10.0.161 and found that visualisation works OK with them.

Is that meant for you or for me?

Until we find the reason, let's not blame anyone.
