Is there a good overview of music main and sub genres somewhere, including classical music? I am currently re-organising a bit and would like to adopt a more standard genre system. Half of my music is classical and most genre overviews are really limited here.

What I usually do is play a song, then go to the "Playing Now" view. Then you'll find the "artist info" under Playing Now in the tree view.
That takes you to allmusic.com to get the info. It lists the genre and styles for the artist.
Here's what comes up for J.S. Bach.

Other than that, how about pulling up the disc on amazon.com. They show the genre near the bottom of the page (sometimes more than one).

This works, but for a large collection it will take a while. Is there a more general list? I have a similar problem in that I go back and forth between too restrictive a genre list and too general. For example, I started with things like Acoustic Blues, Guitar Blues, Chicago Blues, etc. Too often, I ended up wanting simply Blues, so I went back and collapsed all of them. Unfortunately, I still am in the mood for Acoustic Blues.
Your example of Bach illustrates this well. First, there's Classical, then there is all the different types, styles, and periods. Unfortunately, we're limited to genre, so I try not to get too specific.
I guess now I'm asking a different question. Given a standard list of Genres, how does one deal will all the subdivisions?

Add a custom field and name it sub-genre. This would allow you to do your normal selections based on BLUES. Then when you're in the mood for specifics, just search for "Chicago Blues" on the sub field.

So you could just delete the "I hate" songs and use Windows Media Player instead? ;D

I solved it by giving the songs generig genres, and then creating a new semicolon-separated field "Mood". There I can assign several moods to each song, quite easy.
