Title: Using iPod on a machine WITHOUT admin rights?

Hi, here in Cuernavaca MX I have access to a machine, but I do not have admin rights.  When I plug in my iPod, MC recognizes it, as does windows, but when I click on the handheld dialog in the AW, it tells me there is no iPod attached or I do not have the plug in installed.

I had to ask for admin rights to get MC installed, and my iPod worked fine for that afternoon, but I can't always get the rights, and therefore I can't update my iPod right now.

Is there any chance this can be changed?

We got above freezing here yesterday in MN. Glad to hear you are still in Mexico  ;)

I do not think this issue is related to the admin rights.  You could verify by switching the rights on a PC that is working and see if it stops.

thanks for the input.  I won't even tell you how warm it is here today, just that I'm wearing shorts and short sleves right now.

About the iPod deal.  I'm not sure what it might be then.  It worked fine for me with ADMIN rights, and nothing has changed on this machine since, except that.  Windows recognizes the iPod, and I can browse it, and MC also recognizes it and I can browse it in the tree under the drives & devices section, but not as a handhelp, only as a drive in Windows.

Any other ideas?

Not immediately. What happens if you switch back to admin rights? Do things start working again?

PS I am wearing shorts today too, but certain parts off me are getting frostbitten.

Yeah, if I can get the woman here to let me login as admin, everything works just fine.

However, she is only here on occasions, so I'm having to copy my library from the admin install to the user install when I can't login as admin.

Everything else works fine, it seems, except MC just won't recognize my ipod as an ipod if I'm not a supervisor.

I´m not on that machine right now, but I think it´s .190 or .192.

It's 11.0.201 and it still only recognizes my ipod if I'm logged in as an admin.  i tried it last night both ways.  Fine as admin, not recognized as normal user.

Hope that helps.  I only can get supervisor access sometimes, and right now my iPod is empty because the computer crashed when I tried to reload all my music last night, and i couldn't get admin rights again last night.

Last time I used iTunes, I had to wipe out and reinstall all my music.  I have no desire to use iTunes again.  I only used it for the dynamic playlists, but if I synch with MC, everything goes to pot.

Also, the machine I have loaded my music on has almost no free space left, so I don't want to install any other programs.  And finally, I have to get supervisor rights to install iTunes, which I can't get again for a while.

So, in short, I have no idea, sorry.

Justin,

If you want to get to the bottom of this, try creating a text file or copying a file directly to the folder on your iPod where your iTunesDB file is. Do this from within Explorer and do not modify the iTunesDB folder. If you cannot, there is not a way for this to work without Admin rights. If it does work, then I do not know what the problem is.

Steve, I finally got a chance to try this.  I was able to copy a file to the directory where the iTunesDB is located just fine.  From the machine without admin rights, just as a  normal user.

I know you said that if this works, then you have no idea what the problem is, and obviously nether do I.  What else can I do to help track this down?

I understand.

Anyone else have any ideas on rights or permissions in Windows settings that might cause this behavior.  If it's not something in MC, it must be a Windows thing.  I'd spend wome time looking around and trying to change settings, but I'd have to log on and off as superviser to check my changes, and I can't really do that here, and this is a Spanish installation.  I can read-understand quite a bit of spanish, but not enough to make that project feesible.

I did some testing on this today. What I see is that if I am logged on without admin rights, the iPod does not show up in the MC tree. Is this what you see as well?  If so, there is not an easy fix for this. It can be fixed, but it will require some effort.

Yeah, it´s not showing up as an ipod in the tree.  I can browse to it under devices, but I don´t have access to it as an iPod in MC.  I can use it as a drive, but I can´t synch with it.

First, thanks for taking the time to look into this, I realize that you´re trying to button up 11.  I would love it if this could get fixed sooner, rather than later, but I realize that you need to focus on the bigger problems.  If it makes it in with some other changes, great, but I can wait on this deal.  Especially since it appears I´m about the only one that this seems to affect.

PS Hope you are all done with the snow there, you need some of this weather to enjoy for a while, I think.  It´s about 88 today, sunny and no real humidity.

Justin,

Good news. You can access iPod without Admin rights. You need to go to Tools->Options->Handheld Options->Configure remote and fixed drives.

Then, browse to your iPod and give it a 'Name'. After this you will be all set. No need to set anything else.
