Title: Names missing
Post by: BlueGlow on March 06, 2005, 03:21:16 pm
Over 40,000 song names seem to have been cleared in my MC Database after upgrading to .205. I checked a few songs with another MP3 player and the song name tag is still in the file.

(Yes, I am a fool. No, I have not backed up my library in two months.)

Can you explain what you mean exactly?  The track name is missing?  Where?

Did your library get updated?  If not, try searching in Explorer for .jmd files.

The track name is blank when I view it in Media Center, as in playing now, playlists, audio view, etc.
I found a month old backup and compared it to my current jmd files.
field (name).jmd was 1.3MB and now is 47K. So that file was somehow corrupted.

>>Did your library get updated?
My database is updated several times a day since I use DopperRadio to import podcasts to MC every hour or so. I don't think that's what you meant, though. I'll do a search for stray jmd files.

Check MC's Library Tools.  Try a few before you do many.

Try update library from tags, but make a backup up of the current library first.  You don't want to make it worse.

Thanks, Jim and kaiynne, I'll experiment with that.

An hour or so later...
40,000+ tracks in the library updated from the tags.
Looks ok so far, thanks.

So, it seems this is a recurring problem:

I could solve the problem too, but it would be great to find what is the cause of it.

This is a bit worrying. Can no one figure out why name tags (in the library) go missing.

im trying to think how one could do this accidentally.

say we are in playing now, and try to modify the name tag but did not realise that all the tracks in the library were in playing now  and selected, then hit return. Always thought it was a bit strange there was an option to populate playing now with the whole library if playing now happens to be empty (just by dbl clicking in it)

MC at this point usually pops up a message saying several files are going to be updated, and it will take some time.

Do u recall ever seeing such a message Blueglow ?

Can you see what you have in common?

Third party plug-ins?

Any crashes during updates?

King's lyrics finder and Rhino's PlayingNow are the only third-party plug-ins I use, apart from DFX which I don't know if it can be considered a third party plug-in. Rhino's and DFX are always on, while King's is only used once or twice a week.

The ony "special" thing I can remember is that, as I explained in the other thread, MC froze while downloading some lyrics with King's plug-in and I had to kill MC via Task Manager. That event happened the night before, though, and I can't tell for sure if the name of the songs was missing when I first started MC the next day... in fact, I discovered the problem a couple of hours later and not at the beginning of the session.

Anyway, not all the files that had the name missing were in Playing Now for getting lyrics, that's for sure, nor were they in the same HDD.

No third party plug-ins.
>>Any crashes during updates?
I haven't had any crashes while manually updating any data lately,
Mjext /silentimport is happening automatically several times a day to import new podcasts.

There was a crash after docking the iPod two nights ago. There were no obvious updates going on at the time but it's possible that mjext was importing something at that moment.

If MC had Hooked To FTP It Would Work Better, But It May Freeze just give it some time it will continue.

but not sure that would cause your problem, since i have done that also and MC11 was working fine after it.

Yeah, I don't think this is the cause neither, since I cannot infere a cause-effect relationship between both events.

Have I  thanked you King for your plug-ins lately?   :) Thanks for the time and effort you put in them and for sharing them with us for free. Have no idea how much a good ftp control may cost, but I would be glad to make a donation for it, if you ever consider that possibility.

Thanks to you, King  ;)

your welcome

Disclaimer:

If i have to pull big bucks out of my pocket to get it to work correctly i may need to charge in the future for my plug-ins.

I would prefer they are left free for all to use.

now back to a re-run of CSI
