Title: OT: Highest bitrate lossless compressed song?
Post by: evanr76 on March 06, 2005, 08:50:04 pm
In some unscientific sense, you can look at a song's inability to be compressed as proportional to its information complexity, or similarity to noise depending on your perspective (and the compression algorithm).

Right now in my library the least compressible song is (surprisingly) "Total Eclipse of the Heart" by Bonnie Tyler, off of an 80's compilation CD.  1176kbps (WMA lossless).

Mine is "Of Wolf And Man" by Metallica on the "S&M" Album: APE 1100kbps

Edit: On a different note, my most compressed song is "Earth Abides" by Philip Aaberg on the "A Winter's Solstice III" Album: APE 367

Gosh, I'm not even in the running.
My highest is 1084 APE.

What would it be like with APE or FLAC (for the same track) ?

Its interesting you mention noise, i have a feeling that white noise (rainfall, waves breaking on the shore, water flowing) could be quite difficult to compress.

Will have to defer to Matt on this topic for a more authoritative opinion.

Interesting.  That same song is at 1098 in my library (FLAC as well).  I guess the difference is the encoding rate.  Mine is encoded at the max: 8.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers - 02 - Give It Away
From a rip to wav format then encode with all 3 encoders:

APE (2000 or Normal)- 1187  (40.3 Mb)

FLAC (-5)- 1211  (41.0 Mb)

WMA (9.1 Pro VBR Q100 lossless)- 1205  (40.6 Mb)

During playback, I see that the bitrate display changes dynamically with the APE sometimes to a high of 1256. It remains static with the others.
