i have a very trivial question, but can't find an answer by searching the forum:
i'd like to send (copy) sound to an external harddrive (e.g. K:/music) - however, if i choose the files from the audio library, right click and "send to" i can only select "CD/DVD-Drive" or "external programs".
how do i get the files (preferrably with the folder structure i already have -> artist/album/song.mp3) to my external harddrive.
sorry for my ignorance.
m.
using mc 10.0.155

One of the basic concepts behind windows is drag and drop. Open up windows explorer, highlight your music files on C: and drag and drop to K: (example).
I know you asked about doing it in media center but why bother, seems like to much work to me.

You can perform a "copy/move file" operation from within MC. I'm not using MC.10 anymore but it's one of the options under "Library Tools". You may want to test first with a few files and check that the performance is what expected.
Hope that's what you wanted to do.

@Devit
Thanks for the hint, but this way i have to select single files in the media library. i'd like to select albums, or even artists and send them to the harddrive.
also with this method, the folder structure is not reproduced on the destination drive.
-
Just a little nosy and curious.
Why don't you just copy and paste the files using Windows Explorer?
-
cause i don't have the conveniences of the media library there and if i only want to copy half of the albums of an artist, i'd have to create artist folders manually.
-
Huh, why create anything, drag and drop them all, then go back and delete the albums you don't want. If you think the process takes to long or is boring then go do something else for 20 minutes, no big deal.

so what you're saying is, there is no way in media center to send files to an external harddrive. Bummer. There is an option "send to" and "drives and devices" but only to cd and dvd. wouldn't it make sense to be able to add harddrives there as well?
-
Go to Opions/Handheld/Configure remote and fixed drives for detection. Add an entry for your external harddrive (K:/Music) and it will now show up in Drives and Devices, send to, etc.. You can even do a synchronize to it.

RemyJ,
this will work only with local drives.
When starting the transfer to handheld (which is configured as a network path), this message appears:
Error
Out of memory. Upload aborted.
Ok
Needless to mention that on the network drive there is 20GB available space, isn't it?
It works for local drives but not for network drives.
-
RemyJ,
that sounds very interesting. would that be with mc11? i can't find options/handheld in my mc10.0.155. would be a reason to upgrade though...
Fred1,
that's too bad. would it help to map the remote drive as a lokal drive (windows explorer -> tools/map network drive)

It's a bug. Give Steve a chance, I'm sure he'll get to it. It does work if you map the network drive as a drive letter.

Sorry madom, I missed that you're using v10. Yep, it's a v11 feature.

A:
First add the files to a playlist for easy access. Then use "Library Tools > Move/Copy Disk File" for copying the files to a single folder on the external drive. After that import the copied files to a new empty MC library. Use a folder rule in "Rename Files From Properties" tool for rearranging them.
If you later add more files you could keep the playlist and the new library for future reference.
EDIT: Edited a bit.

It's a bug. Give Steve a chance, I'm sure he'll get to it. It does work if you map the network drive as a drive letter.
It does not work if you want to change the format when you transfer.
Example is set the handhaeld device to encode to MP3 and skip same filetype.
Send an apl file to the device.
Click transfer.
You will get an error that the file is not supported.
-
And it does not really sync, even when you map it to a local drive letter.
It only copies over the files but no changes, that are made on the files on the mapped drive, are synced back to the original.
Even with the option "Sync data to MC" set. :-\

I've got 11.0.316 and this is still happening. True that mapping it to a drive letter makes it work, but I'd rather not have to do that. Any progress on this one?
Cheers,
Jeff
