For some reason I've lost the ability to play
real audio files through media center.
It used to just play them.
Now they appear with a white icon, and double clicking them starts up
Real Player and plays them thru that.
?

Do you need to install Real Player? You can find a link in the FAQ near the top of this board. MC uses the Real Player engine.
-
You didn't read my post too well did you ::) :)
Real player is installed as it always has been.
Media Center has just forgotten it has the abillity to play real things.
It's like me, I've got a bad memory too!

Not all versions of Real will work. Please check the FAQ and try updating. It's possible that Real was updated. MC wouldn't "forget".
-
OK I've read the FAQ.
However I've always had Real Player 10 Gold on my machine.
I keep a folder called Useful Programs where the setup file for the
10 Gold has sat long before I started using Media Jukebox then Centre.
I'll try downloading version 8.0, althought I'm not sure this will play the lossless
audio that most of my music is in.
The weird thing is it always used to work.
Cheers

Re-reading your messages, it looks like Real has stolen the file associations. Set them again in MC and then re-set the file associations in your current Real Player. Also turn off the Active Start Center in Real Player. It's hard to find but it's in the RP preferences.
You may also need to fiddle with "File Types" in Windows Explorer/Tools/Folder Options.

Definitley something odd going on.
I reassociated ra with Media Player...
and now when I double click a ra file
it just sits in a permenent loop where the mouse cursor
changes to an hour glass then back to a pointer!
:-\
Wish I knew what i done!

Check the Media Type in Action Window > File Properties > Tag Info. I imported some Real audio files as a test and the media type showed up as "Data". I changed it to "Audio" and the files started to work better.
I am not very familiar with Real audio formats. I know it has many variants including a lossless format, but I don't know what differences decompression codecs have. Could it depend on the format/version you have?
You could try a program called Real Alternative. MC might work better with its codecs. If you try it uninstall first all other Real players. http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/video_players/real_alternative.cfm
EDIT
Now they appear with a white icon ...
The white icon is probably MC's document icon. In that case the Media Type is probably "Data" and changing it to "Audio" could help.

Thanks, that worked.
