Hi,
I don't really want to install Windows Media Player 10. Each time I install a new build of MC11, it goes painfully through the process of downloading it and then asking me for a Yes/No answer. I always say No and it aborts, then continues to install MC11, seemingly without any ill side effects.
My questions are 2:
1. Is Windows Media Player 10 necessary for MC11 to work properly?
2. If not, would it be possible for the installer to ask the question before going and downloading it?
Thanks,
Kwake

1. No.
2. I don't know.
It is possible to install only the WMF codec pack. After that MC should not bother you with this matter. Check this thread and the links in it. http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=26930
P.S. The last post in it was only three hours ago. You could have found it by yourself... ;)

Thanks Alex B.
I guest the important question is if MC 11 works fine without WMP 10, why can't the installer give you the choice of Yes/No before going out to download it?
Thanks,

It does not try to install Windows Media Player 10. Only the latest Windows Media codecs. JRiver has decided that they are needed for MC11. Because you cancelled the codec pack installation MC tries it again during the next MC installation.

Ahh, OK - if it's only the codecs, then I won't mind saying yes after all...and should no longer have the problem. It's really only Media Player 10 itself I don't like.
Thanks for your time Alex B.
Cheers,

Both the player and the codec will have to stay out of my computer. There are many posts now in HTPC forums about problems with different kinds of media files because of WMP 10.
Does that mean that I can't get a newer version than the one I have, even though I have WMP 9 codecs? And what's the reason behind that, when I don't even want to use WMV or WMA files?

Here's a thread that explains WM changes in MC11:

It's also listed in the MC11 instruction thread.
I'll close this one now.
