I have a number of files that I copied over from my mac. They're all mpeg4/aac files with the m4a extension, 125kbps. From the UI, they appear to be playing in both MC10 and MC11, all of the tags are properly read, but I do not get any sound from my sound card if it is in ASIO mode. MP3/APE work fine with ASIO.
If I turn ASIO diagnostics on, I do not get the diagnostic window when clicking play on one of these files. If I play another file (mp3/ape), the diagnostics come up.
If I switch to the motherboard's sound card and play using waveout, it works fine (barring the reduced sound quality and terrible SNR).
Behavior is identical in MC10 and MC11.

As far as I know MC uses QuickTime engine and its options for playing AAC files. QT player has options only for Wave Out and Direct Sound. On my PC MC can play m4a files through my ASIO capable soundcard, but ASIO mode is not possible for that file format.
I guess that your better soundcard is not configured to be your system's default soundcard. That's why QT sends output to your other soundcard. Or have you somehow disabled Wave Out and Direct Sound from your soundcard controls?
My Terratec soundcard can play whatever comes in. It uses automatically the correct output mode. Actually, it has no options for that.
I have converted the few m4a files that I have to Monkey's Audio format, because MC cannot fully use m4a files. APE files are naturally much bigger, but there's no further quality loss from transcoding. I used dBpowerAMP for conversion.
