I am looking for a hd based mp3 player for a friend. They don't have wireless or a pc so I need to find something that I can just put the mp3's onto and have them display on the pc. I know that tivo's and some dvd players can do this but does anyone know anything that is just a standalone device. I am really having a hard time finding anything that looks promising.
Thanks,
Kain

I guess you mean "TV" otherwise your question doesn't make sense.
I would answer iPod or similar, but those devices don't have a TV output as far as I know. I suppose a remote controller is also preferred.
EDIT
I was wrong. iPod Photo has a color TV-Out. With proper wiring the unit itself could work as a wired remote.
There is also a wireless remote, but I don't know if the TV-Out can be used at the same time. http://www.tentechnology.com/products/products_navipod_gen2.php
EDIT2
It seems that Archos (http://www.archos.com) has interesting produts. For example:

Search on the word "Roku". They make a player. Be prepared for sticker shock. But out of all the integrated drive-based players theirs is the current "least worst" to use.

No, you wouldn't be able to use TV-out and this system at the same time since the adapter you plug in your iPod just has a plain stereo out.

I guess they will soon make a version that supports it or some other company will make it. I was surprised to find out how many iPod accessories are currently available.
In the meanwhile I read more about the Archos products (EDIT2 earlier). They seem to have a solution to this. In my opinion it would make sense to get also a portable device in the same purchase instead of buying new technology in an old fashioned non-portable package.

The Buffalo HD LinkTheater is an interesting possibility:
