Lame error as before.
I've no problems with converting from any format to mp3. I just tried ape, wma lossless and wave. (With MC 11.0.236, since I have the "The parameter is incorrect" problem with the builds 240 and 241.)
Do you have more than one MC version installed? I suspect you have registry problems with the installed dll versions. You may want to check these threads:

Could you explain the problem more thoroughly?

Just did a few myself.
What LAME error do you get?
Are you installed to te default directory for MC?
And, have you changed the temp directory that MC uses?
-
Just the standard windows error.
"lame.exe has encountered a problem and need to close"
Sometimes i can convert one track at a time but if a queue up a whole album i rarely get past the first/second track.
-
Are you using default settings for MP3 encoding?
-
Done a complete uninstall of MC11 today.
Deleted all c:\program files\ JRiver files
Went through the complete registry and removed all reference to J River. Media Center, Media Jukebox.
Reboot - and then reinstalled MC 11
Same problems as before.
Started with default setting for mp3 and then tried a few others
Still the same.
Is there an older version of lame.exe i could try?
Any other ideas.

www.rarewares.org (http://www.rarewares.org)
Download the next LAME 3.96.1 and 3.90.3 versions from there and try them:
3.96.1 "John33 compile" http://www.rarewares.org/dancer/dancer.php?f=2
3.90.3 "modified for --presets" http://www.rarewares.org/files/mp3/lame-3.90.3modified.zip
Replace the "lame.exe" file in MC plugins folder. Backup the original file.
Let us know if that makes any difference. Post also your System Info from MC Help.

tried both of these and the 3.96.1 version works much better but still throws the odd error.
But it does convert a few tracks before it errors.
The 3.90.3 version in the worst - can teven get 1 track done.
I have uninstalled v11. and reinstaled v10 to see if its any better but i get the same errors
I have tried it also on my laptop which has V10 and V11 on it and it works fine on this PC.
So ther must be something left on my PC thats causing the error.
Can i run LAME on its own without MC to see if it is okay as a standalone product.
Dont know much about the command line stuff.
Info below.

Have you done any general hardware "burn-in" tests to make sure your system is running completely stable? The LAME encoder does make use of some processor optimizations and tends to push the system as hard as it can to get the encode done quickly, and if your processor is overclocked or your memory is flaky, it could cause random errors.
As a test, I would try running Memtest86 (http://www.memtest86.com/) and Prime95 (http://www.mersenne.org/freesoft.htm) on the affected machine to see if it can make it through a few passes. If it "survives" these tests, then it is probably software and not hardware related. You can often bang your head against the wall trying to diagnose problems through software that are actually hardware failures (memory, processor overclocking, and power-supply problems are some of the most common, and least diagnosed problems out there).

Maybe you've said, but which lossless format are you converting from?
Can you try converting to another format? Just to test?
Converting FROM another format might also be useful.

Dont know much about the command line stuff.
It's not difficult. In External Encoder > Advanced link lame.exe and write the string you like to use.
For example,
EXE Path: C:\LAME\lame.exe
Parameters: %IN %OUT --preset standard
Extension: mp3
- long filenames ticked
You can see the parameters in MP3 options. Look at the command line box when you change options:
e.g. this makes CBR 128: %IN %OUT --preset cbr 128
EDIT
I realized you meant totally without MC. Here are the instructions:

Well well - a big thanks to glynor
It was something in the bios of my PC. Dont know what as i just went into the BIOS and did a reset to system defaults. Optimal settings.
Then tagged about 50 .ape files and converted to mp3. - Perfect. first time.
Obvoiusly the lame.exe didnt like something in the bios and different versions of it were less bothered than others.
Every other process on my PC has been fine and i use my PC 12 hours a day. So lame.exe must be extremely sensitive. WHen i converted wma lossless to mp3 using ITunes everything was fine.
Thanks again everyone.
Cheers

A happy ending! Thanks, Glynor and everyone else who helped.
I just added this to the "Weird Yet Wonderful" thread and discovered that Glynor is on a hot streak. Check the last message in this thread:

Move over Jim
Looks like we need glynor as the new CEO or CTO maybe.
Or maybe a big thanks is enough to keep him/her happy
