? my head is aching - can't getr a view scheme to work....
Background: I have a set of files in APE format some of which have been duplicated in MP3 format for download to my iPOD, these duplicated files are stored in a different directory
Can anyone help please with a view scheme that lists only those tracks that exist in APE format but NOT in MP3
eg. list filenames that exist in "\\server\music2\music" that don't have a duplicate filename in "\\server\music2\ipod"
I need a beer and its only 11:00am

Go to 'Edit View Scheme', and in the search bar at the bottom you can do either of 2 things;
1, click the dropdown arrow and find the field 'File Type'. Click on it and a wizard will open and you can choose which file types to show or;
2, type -[filename]=XXXX, where XXXX is something that uniquely identifies the path to the files you don't want to show
Does that help?

EpF... thanks for the reply but no I don't think so
I'm trying to list only those files that still need converting to MP3

;D got it! not perfect but might be good enough
create a smart list of duplicates
create a view which lists all tracks NOT in the smartlist
Can anyone think of a more elegant / robust solution?

Marketability - sorry, I didn't read your post thoroughly. As it happens, I have built a whole load of smartlists which deal with different aspects of duplication for handhelds. I put a description of the process here:

You might find it helpful. I also use the method you describe to sort out which files need converting. I don't think there is a more elegant solution at the moment - I wish there was. I'm hoping that in the next version of MC the Expression Evaluator recently introduced will have some developments that can do a better job of sorting out duplicated files AND tags...

Thanks - I'll take a look
Do you know of a way to list those files on a handheld (assuming its connected)?
Cheers

Don't know quite what you mean... But if you're handheld can be read as a hard drive in windows, you can find it in 'my computer' and import the files into your library. Then all the files that show up in MC with whatever drive letter your handheld uses will be that list; they'll just show up as missing whenever the device is not connected.
Otherwise you'd just have to maintain a playlist of the files... Is that what you meant?

I was hoping to have a view that listed all files converted to MP3 in my MP3 directory that are not already synched with the ipod
I was hoping to create a view based on not in playlist (converted) and not in playlist (already on ipod)
Guess I'll have to have to manage it by using a master playlist containing the ipod files
