Title: MC 11 and DTS-WAV support
Post by: PhDSM on April 26, 2005, 03:03:13 pm
Do you have any plan to support WAV files coded in DTS Surround like the one support by VLC Media Player ?
Thanks

You can play DTS files with an external decoder using MC with an ASIO / SPDIF connection.

We currently have no plans to add an internal decoder, although the input SDK is freely available so a third party could code this.

This even works with the UPnP server as do AC3 (Dolby Digital) files.....

I got DTS wave files working through SPDIF after some trouble with ASIO drivers:

MC could have a switch for sending the output to a DTS decoding filter instead of directly decoding them. It works with videos, but MC doesn't have a mechanism for audio DTS wave files.

I have imported some DTS wave files to MC and tagged them. On my HTPC I can play them directly with MC using an external DTS decoder. On my other PCs (with analog audio output) I must use other player programs for playing those files.

I don't understand this.  I was able to pass DTS files onto my receiver with the Roku Soundbridge and the uPnP server.  So, why can't I pass the audio unaltered out the digital outs of my soundcard without ASIO?  How is this any different than playing a DVD and decoding the Dolby Digital with my receiver??

cncb -

Windows mixes all audio and resamples everything to 48kHz via it's kmixer.  I'm not an expert - don't know the 'why' other than it allows all sounds to be heard - beeps and such mixed right in with your music.  To get non-resampled audio (required for bit-perfect and hence for DTS .wav files) you need ASIO or one of the other specific solutions such as the Soundbridge with this type of support.

Good info here http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=26238

Also, I believe there are others on this board with more detailed info if you wish.  There's also AVS Forums etc. if you want to tap into deeper waters ...

MC uses standard audio drivers for DTS wave files. Direct Sound and Wave out are unfortunately not bit perfect. They work fine for normal PCM audio, but ruin DTS. Only ASIO can pass unaltered audio streams (with MC). Also, the soundcard must support 44.1 kHz sample rate. For example, most Soundblaster models are out of question because they resample 44.1 kHz to 48 kHz.

It is possible to wrap AC3 audio files in Matroska containers without video. Then MC handles them like video files and can use the same audio filters that are used with video files. I have not tried DTS wave inside Matroska yet.

Thanks for the responses.  I guess understand that the audio and video take different paths when playing them but it seems that there should be a way to just send the audio out like I can do for DVDs with DTS.  Oh well...
