Title: cannot play real files
Post by: daniel_2k on May 10, 2005, 04:09:43 pm
Hello!

I have installed the new Real Player 10, but MC shows the message "Cannot determine the version of real networks real player... Do you want to download...?"

I also tried the Real Alternative. The same message.
What can I do to play Real media files in MC?

Please check the FAQ here for a version that should work.

It seems to be a new bug in MC11. At least Real audio (.ram) playback worked a month ago or so. I had Real Alternative installed then. Now I tried also RealPlayer 10.5. But installing it didn't help.

I checked when it worked. MC says that I played my .ram files 32.9 days ago.

The old version that worked before I installed Real Alternative is RealPlayer 8. It has rather old version of Real codecs. I have a hunch that it is also broken, but I'll give it a try.

RP8 can be found here: http://forms.real.com/real/player/blackjack.html

My hunch was wrong. I installed RP8 and my few .ram files started to work.

After that I unistalled RP8 and installed the latest Real Alternative back (I need it for other things). I guess my Real Media play counts in MC will not change anymore...

Our understanding is that Real won't allow playback unless the file association for the file is with a program in the system directory.

We no longer keep mjextman in the system directory.

Perhaps there's another workaround...

This seems to be a recent change. I found a .ram file that was last played six days ago with MC. I installed MC 11.0.256 back and now I can play .ram files. My only installed "Real" codec & software is Real Alternative 1.3.7.

Now with 11.0.263 I get only this when I try to play .ram files:

The same warning appeared earlier when I tried the latest RealPlayer (10.5).

After clicking "Exit" MC shows this:

Matt's comment above is probably correct.  Real tries to make it a little difficult.

Actually, I am not worried about myself. I have only a few downloaded low quality Real Media audio files. Some interviews, jokes, instruction files etc. I listen to them once a month or so and I can use Real Alternative for that (It uses Media Player Classic player).

That warning is what new MC users will see. They will go and install RealPlayer 10.5 as instructed and it does not help.

Bump.

Any solutions for this? I can't go back to earlier versions of Real due to some of the media I have.

Perhaps manually copying mjextman.exe from the MC11 directory back to C:\WINDOWS\system32\ would help!  I just did this myself because all my scripts broke when they moved it into the install directory, and it was easier to copy it back to the system folder than to fix all my scripts.

It works fine there, and perhaps it would help with Real files?

We know about the problem and are working on it.

Thanks for your patience.
