Title: How to choose a Handheld for MC

Hi,

I notice posts referring to problems with various handhelds. 

I am looking to get a handheld (my first!) and wonder what (considering the problems) the best choice is, considering I am now wedded to MC11.0.250.

I use APE format and I am looking for something that will bed nicely into MC and allow for on the fly conversion to MP3 or other when moving files to the chosen handheld.

Disk or solid state is not an issue: smooth usability with MC is the priority.

One of my sons uses an iPod with MC, the other has an Xclef 800 and they're both very happy.  I've tried a variety of generic flash and hd based handhelds, and they've been fine too.  I get the impression that the name brands, perhaps in order to differentiate themselves from the competition, often introduce features which make it difficult for 3rd party suppliers to work with them.
