I had been getting issues with pause/resume at the end of songs just where the buffer might be kicking in, so I increased buffer to 4 seconds, and found that the songs then switched to the next track four seconds sooner, as if cross fading immediately. This occured under "direct sound" output and under "wave out", both for "gapless" option and for "standard/.1s". Instead of buffering, the tracks appear to be cross fading the given amount immediately.

Could someboday take a look at the "Buffering" setting under Tools/Options/Output Mode Setting? It seems to be cutting off the end of previous songs, not buffering. The default setting is very low, but when I turn it up to 3,4,or 5 seconds it cuts to the next song early by whatever I've set. Can this possibly be right?

With these settings on my MC10 setup, I get no crossfading at all, but when playing back, MC10 moves on to the next song almost immediately, and so fast that the playback bar is usually ahead of itself by a second or two.
Between tracks: standard
Gap 1.0
Seeking: standard
Stop: immediate
And my buffering is set at .50.
I don't understand what buffering does that the gap setting doesn't.
