How can I manually (I don't sync my iPod) change a genre for an artist/album that is already on the iPod?
I've changed a few genres for bands in MC11, and just want to makes those changes on the iPod (using MC 11) without re-sending all of the files. I tried selecting the iPod in "Drives and Devices" and just changing the tags, but the changes don't stick.

Steve can chime in here, but I'm 99% sure you can't do this without resynching. Why don't you want to do that?

the reason i'm trying to do it this way is that I don't sync - i upload everything manually. the files are on my pc in .ape format and convert to .mp3 on the fly - so it takes a while to delete from the iPod and upload the files again (particularly when there are several hundred files).

I still don't understand why you don't sync (since you can convert on the fly while syncing -- I do this all the time for my MuVo).
But nonetheless, isn't Genre a field contained in the .ape file? That is where you should make the change, regardless of how you move the stuff to your iPod.

You cannot modify the genre tag on the iPod after the file is there. It must be resent either by sync or by deleting the files with the changed genre and then resending.
