Title: MC11 DVD Playback
Post by: cncb on June 02, 2005, 10:16:07 pm
I tried to play a DVD and it just gives me an error "Key exchange for DVD copy protection failed."  I tried two disks and they both play fine in PowerDVD.

It's a protected DVD.  There are ways around it.  Region-free, the program, is one.

I'm not sure why they would be "protected".  I tried the Titanic and Monsters, Inc both of which play in PowerDVD on the same pc and play in my stand-alone DVD player fine.

I've encountered same sort of problem with my DVD's when I try to play some of them back with Zoomplayer using Nvidia DVD Decoder. I manage to single out the problem to the new DVD burner that I bought (Aopen).

If I use another DVD rom (HP DVD+R Burner) it works perfectly fine even with the DVD's that I have problem before. You might want to check if there is flash available for your rom that might get rid of that problem.

Escaflo's suggestion is a good one. Also, here is a quote from the zoom player FAQ that may help:

Quote
What causes the "Key exchange for DVD copy protection failed" error?

There are several reasons. The first may be an improperly installed version of DirectX. Installing the latest version is the first step.

Another popular reason for this message is that you have some 3rd party program running in the background which is interfering with drive access. Common programs are DVD Background program (region-free and such) and CD/DVD Packet Writing drivers that may come bundled with CD/DVD Burning programs such as "RecordNow", "Nero" and "Easy CD Creator". You may be able to disable these programs interference within the DVD Drive's property page.

Here is a direct quote from a user who resolved this issue:
I have or should I say had a copy of Stomps RecordNow installed and like Nero & Roxio they have their own packet writing software called DLA. I wasn't even aware it was on my computer. there's no system tray icon. The only way you know is buy opening the properties of your drive or if you right click on the drive there will be an option to enable or disable DLA. I disable the software and uninstalled and I have Zoom Player back. Something you might want to remember because I'm sure someone else is going to run into this same problem. Thanks

Thanks for the suggestions.  This is a Sony DVD burner and the only drive I have in the system.  I updated the firmware and disabled DLA with no luck (it also doesn't work in WMP either).  I can only seem to play DVDs in PowerDVD the software that came with the drive which isn't the end of the world...

Its probably the same case as my burner then. It would be good if you could get a hand on another rom (from friend..) just to test if it is really your burner fault. :) Anyway, if you can't, I guess you are gonna have to stick with PowerDVD for now. :)

Can anyone give some help on configuring MC11 to work with DVD Region-Free?  Until now, I have not used MC11 for DVD playback.

My PowerDVD works fine for the same disc, however WMP does not.

I have configured MC11 into the DVD R-F "Program" settings.

However, DVD R-F does not start when MC11 is started as it is configured and it does start for PowerDVD and WMP.

Thanks!
