Just checking in, are we STILL waiting for album art support for the photo ipod? I'm really hating itunes.
-
Yes. Sorry for the delay.

Yep, ITunes is a bummer all right.....
Any idea of the time frame Steve? Month or longer/Less...
Thanks
-
is there any plan to implement this feature a little sooner now that the "iPod color" is out?
-
I do not know when exactly this will be implemented. Sorry. I will update when I am able.

Another long time MC user (bought every version since v8 ), and new iPod Photo owner here. No doubt about it, iTunes is a bloated, clunky program. Lack of coverart/photo support in MC11 is the ONLY thing keeping me from booting iTunes out of my life forever.
So basically I'm just another MC user dropping by to nag about coverart support.
And as soon as you've got that done you can get started on the RSS Podcast subscription plugin. ;) I don't ask for much. ;D
-
Thanks for the bump. The changes that were made (but are not yet released) to make iPod compatible with the latest iPod firmware made a big step towards being ready to get cover art supported. It really is coming.
Steve
-
Amen
;D

I have got this cool photo-thing for my iPod which let me upload pictures directly to my iPod without a computer. This, however doesn't help in getting my old pics on the iPod.
Steve,
Good to hear your working on it!
edit: Will the unreleased update help on the dynamic playlist matter?
-

Not immediately. Photo support will happen before dynamic playlists.

I just bought a brandnew Ipod Nano and I am looking forward to use "Album Art" with MC too.

Does MC otherwise work with the Nano?
-
any idea when mc12 will be out? I'm a long time user of mc11, really like the program, would love to have the album art feature. Kinda lost my temper awhile back with you guys, sorry about that, I work in IT and know how it is to have people saying "is it fixed yet, how about now".
Hate itunes, but have been using it in order to use the album art features.
"how about now?"

Hi Steve,
I just got a new iPod 60 today. What photo features will the next big update support? Really looking forward to the new stuff. Good luck with implementation!
Thanks,
bg
-
The work to prepare for photo support is done. The work to implement photo support remains to be done. Not sure on a timeline.
Dave, thanks for the understanding.
-
No problem Steve, sorry for the earlier tantrum.
:o
-
Just on the off chance, is there any kind of time envisaged for this iPod Photo plug-in to be released ? I mean ... which is more likely: 1 month, 3 months, or 6 months ?
Not nagging, just adding my heartfelt wish that this would be implemented ASAP .... it's been a long year !
P.
-
Yeah, I'd like to hear a general ETA as well, like a month vs a few months vs next year vs next version. I hope it's not the last!
-
I don't know the answer. Sorry. It depends on many factors other than my desire to get it to you.
Steve
-
just like to add my name to the list of people eagerly (yet patiently) awaiting this functionality.

So am I to understand that 11.1 is ready and available, or is it still in testing? My copy of MC sure isn't finding it when updating. . .
-
11.1 is available but:
Since you posted in that thread I assume you're asking because you're interested in album art. I understand this feature is not available yet in the current alpha of 11.1

Don't use 11.1 yet unless you believe it solves a problem you're having. It is definitely still in testing.

it spends Hrs Sync'ing then hangs over night till I fininally reboot
It worked OK w/ Itunes but I woudl perfer to use MC

Try this thread:

and try reading the "Quick Start" thread.
11.1 may already be better with the iPod but wait if you can.

So the Ipod Photo has been out for a few months now...and I just got the ipod video and MC cannot do photos yet?
I don't want to use itunes but I was wondering if I could use itunes for just downloading photos to my ipod. and use MC10 for music.
wondering?
thanks.
-
I have no songs in the itunes database.
I use itunes to copy a folder of photos to the ipod and MC syncs the music. This is with 11.1 though. 10's ipod compatibility is quite different so I can't speak to that version.

You can use MC to do the xfer, then use anapod Trial, to enable the photo's.

Album art and photo support is coming. Really.

Do you have an approxamite time frame?

No. Sorry.

In another thread some kind people explained how this all works on the iPod. Apparently the iPod doesn't extract the jpegs from the files, it gets them from small thumbnails stored on the iPod somewhere. So does this mean that MC (unlike iTunes) need not be restricted by having to have cover art stored inside files? Presunably if MC is going to build these thumbnails and put them on the iPod it could do so no matter where the cover art is stored. That would be a big help for the growing number of users who use Folder.jpg or MC's cover art folder.
-
J,
So does this mean that MC (unlike iTunes) need not be restricted by having to have cover art stored inside files?
It appears that this will be the case.
-
Thanks for posting this Steve. In preparation for MC ipod album art support, I was halfway through adding my cover art inside every file when I read this. I think I'll back those changes out now and look into the folder.jpg option. My question is... if I turn off the "Store in file also" option and reapply the cover art to the files, will the cover art be removed from the file?
Trent
-
Great news Steve. Thanks.
My question is... if I turn off the "Store in file also" option and reapply the cover art to the files, will the cover art be removed from the file?
Change the option then, if the folder.jpg is still inside the album folder, just remove cover art from the files (Right click>Image>Remove) and then do a 'Quick Find in File / Cover Art Directory'. If Folder.jpg is not in the album folder and you have the image stored inside the file do the following:
1. Download and install King Sparta's plug in to 'Move to Folder.jpg'
2. Select track 1 on all affected albums and add to Playing now
3. Run the plugin to move art to folder.jpg
4. Select all affected albums and remove cover art but do not delete from hard drive.
5. Select all affected albums and do a 'Quick find...'
-
Okay, it sounds like I may have screwed myself up. I have always had "store images in tags also" selected and then in the location rule I have in a specific folder and all my cover art has been in one folder that I've designated for this. So, from what I've read here when cover art is supported on the iPod with MC I may be SOL, am I correct? Unless I go through all my music and do what was prescribed in the above post?
Further more, how would purchased music that is all kept in one folder have the cover art shown?
-
pilotbum,

Not sure yet. This issue is still being worked out.

Any word yet on whether album art will have to be stored within tags to work with MC? ... and on when MC album art support is coming?
thanks

It's already here, and I believe it can be either in the File, or as Folder.jpg
-
It's here? It's not working on mine.
-
It's only in the last couple of builds of 11.1 and it isn't quite right still.
-
I am frustrated with my many trials to get the cover art on my ipod photo 20GB.
I've seen some more users with that problem in that forum and it seems to be a miracle covers show up sometimes and sometimes not. As I don't believe in miracles I wonder if anybody knows the secret behind it?
I've tried it last time with MC11.1.70. I initialized ipod, I rebuilt the database...
I store cover art within the files. Any idea what I can try next?
-
It should be working in that version.
What kind of files? MP3?
What kind of art? JPG?
-
Chris,
With version 11.1.70 I am not having any problems with the cover art feature. I have checked quite a few files on the IPOD and have found no problems. When there is no art, what appears on the IPOD?... no art at all, or the regular media center icon?
Have you double-checked to make sure that each individual file that you are transferring has album artwork? I have found in the past that sometimes I think that all files have art because the it shows up under albums in the Library Browser...only to find out that only one of the files has art with it.
-
I have read some people say that this feature won't work with the video ipod (5G) which is what I have. Before I try, can someone confirm whether cover art is working with this version of the ipod yet?
Thanks,
Trent
-
5g should display album art correctly if you use 11.1.70 or later (current beta 11.1.71). I can't confirm since I have a 4g, but it's definitely in the list of fixes for 11.1.70
-
What kind of files? MP3?
What kind of art? JPG?
File format is mp3. Cover art is in the files. Is it important what type it previously was (and maybe also quality?)
I normally copy/paste them via clipboard.
When there is no art, what appears on the IPOD?... no art at all, or the regular media center icon?
I only get Title-Artist-Album when playing, no frame for cover art, no media center icon.

Yes, I build a smartlist with only 1 track of an album that has cover art. So every song has cover art.
I forgot to mention that I also installed the latest ipod updater of 2005-11-17 (Version 1.2).
-
Chris,
I have a video ipod and also store images within the file and everything is working. The only difference appears to be that the ipod updater that I used was from 10-12 and not 11-17. Do you have an older version of the updater that you could test?
-
Yes, before I tried with updater 2005-03-23, so first I thought this could solve the problem. I doubt it's worth trying to get an older version?
Might it be possible I need to run the ipod with itunes at least once? Meanwhile I deinstalled itunes because this raised problems with MC: I connected ipod with a running instance of itunes in order to search the podcasting section in itunes store. Afterwards, MC crashed when starting (some weeks ago).
So, is it worth reinstalling itunes to try out?
-
Chris,
The machine that I am using does not have itunes installed so it is not really necessary to use it. Before I transferred my music I used the updater to restore, and then deleted the itunesdb file...though I am not sure if this is necessary. I then initiallized in MC and everything has worked fine.
I believe that the updater from 10-12 is the first one that worked with the video so I think that that would be as far back as you could go. Which version of the updater came with your IPOD?
-
2005-03-23 was the first, then I updated yesterday to the current.
-
Chris,
Lets try to simplify this in an effort to solve it. Initialize your iPod. Transfer one file with coverart and verify that it is not appearing. If not, please email me the file at steve @ jriver.com.
Also, go to Help->Configure debug logging and enable 'Output to a log file' and then enable log events for 'Handhelds' and then restart MC. View the log and look for 'IpodType' and post your model number as reported by MC.
Thanks.
Steve
-
FYI, I am using a 5G and the 10-12 updater and the .71 beta is working well for me, album art and Videos too. I'm going to start archiving the updaters, they become difficult to find once the new one is released.
-
Hey Steve, I have about 9,000 files on my ipod, Some with art and some with the default art, (MC Logo).
Is there a way or will there be a way to identify what files on my pod do not have art?
Thanks.
-
Steve,
I sent a file to you via email. Hope you received it and you can confirm the album art is in the file. Meanwhile, I uploaded 17 GB and no cover shows up!
What am I doing wrong?
-
Everyone,
Chris's problem is that he has an iPod that is not in the documentation that I am using to decide whether or not to send iPod artwork. The problem will go away now that I know his model number. In the future for anyone who is not seeing artwork, please follow my last instruction to retrieve the iPod model number (as recognized by MC) and then post it. With this information, I can fix this kind of issue quickly.
Thanks.

Not at this time. We can enhance this in the future.

Steve, if there are models out there that you are not picking up in your code why not introduce a 'Force art to iPod option' with a suitable warning to the user that they must be sure their iPod supports artwork before proceeding and what the consequences will be if they select it by mistake. This will surely make life easier for you and empower knowledgable users to 'help the software along' where Apple is making life difficult for you.
You could perhaps make it even more intuitive by introducing a wizard that decides whether the iPod supports artwork and guides them accordingly but offers the user an override option with a suitable explanation as to when they might use it (i.e. 'I know my iPod supports artwork so just let me force it!')
-
J,
You make a good suggestion. I think it makes sense to add your option if this a relatively common occurence, but as of now it seems to be an isolated instance. If I hear of another couple of instances of this, I think the scale will tip in favor of the overhead of your suggestion.
Thanks for thinking this through.
