Sorry for the double posting, but I wasn't getting any action in the Other Hardware section and I didn't see any way to simply move the post.
I would like to get some kind of remote control for my laptop & MC. There are a million remotes out there that work with PCs, but of course none (that I've seen) specifically mention MC.
I looked at the plugins page, but with names like X10 and USBIRT or something like that, I couldn't match those plugins to an actual device for sale.
So I know lots of people have these and use them. Can someone make a recommendation?
Couple of notes: I have an iPaq 2215 PocketPC which has IR & bluetooth, so if there was a way to just use that and get it to work with MC, that would be fine.
I'll be moving soon and I expect to be in a pretty small place, so I think IR would be fine (that is, I don't really need RF 'cause I can be within sight of the laptop).
Mostly I'd use it for music, but I'd use it for DVDs and for looking at Photos, too, if it worked well (or even worked with another program).
Thanks everyone.

For IR, you can go with the IRMAN; http://www.evation.com/, (about US$ 35), it's an IR reciever that plugs into serial port, (I think it also has a USB adapter) and you can use any IR remote control. The MC plugin allows you to program most of the keys. Range is about 30ft.
For longer range and no line of sight (& thru walls) go RF. I use the ATI Remote Wonder (reciever uses USB), comes with it's own remote control and doesn't need a plugin, (about $50).
X-10 RF Remote Control System: http://www.x10.com/entertainment/index.html
X-10 entertainment remote is part of a whole home automation system, but the remote control system for the entertainment system is available separately is currently on sale for $ 69. There are other manufacturers that make X-10 compatible devices. MC has a plugin for the X-10 remote.

Ooohhh, now it all makes sense. Thank you so much. Sometimes things are just simpler than I think they are.

If you need more range with the recievers, you can always use a USB or serial extention to move the reciever closer to where you need it.

Hello Modelmaker,
You say X10 compatible RC work on MC
I have a Marmitek PC Control, X10 compatible.
But it is not working.
The connection is USB.
Do you know what to do?
Downloading drivers from MC is not working.

There is Nevo remote software for the HP handhelds. Supposed to work UPnP.

I have tried the program mouseremote downloaded on the marmitek side.
Looks like something is working.
I can cross my cursor over the screen or go down or up ont the left screen from MC like from playing now to playlist etc.
But the essential buttons are not working.
The play, stop, pause, next, skip, louder etc. is not working.
Though, the Remote Control is working, but not all the buttons.
I am a dummy for this. Please help
Ben.

have you tried the simple remote control configuration screen in mc? sorry, but sometimes we miss the simple stuff :)
-
I thought, stupid ! Why not?
So I tried everything.
All the drivers downloaded. No contact.
All the drivers are looking at com1, while mine is a USB connection.
The uusb-irt driver gives me an error.
And that stupid driver is for usb connections. The Irman gives the same error.
So I have a x10 compatible remote with USB connection, but the drivers see contact on com1, but give no respond.
The others give an error.
Help.

You need NetRemote from www.promixis.com
They have collaborated with MC for many years so support for MC is second to none. The only issue is that your PPC doesn't support WiFi. Bluetooth will work but if you are serious about using your PPC as a remote for your media player you should consider a WiFi ppc.
