Title: Request: 64-bit MC11
Post by: davisford on August 03, 2005, 03:02:42 pm
Hi,

I am sure this is low on the priority list, but I have moved to the Athlon 64-bit architecture, and am now running Windows XP x64 on it.

It runs 32-bit application code fine with a thin emulator, but 64-bit code obviously runs much faster.

The list of apps that are compiled for 64-bit is limited today, but seems to be growing.

I would really love to get a 64-bit version of MC11 -- I would be happy to beta test it.  The library I have is quite large, and MC11 is one of the more processor/memory intensive applications I use.  Having a 64-bit version would really be fantastic.

Just a thought...

are there any development tools for 64bit?

Yes, I dunno what compiler suite of tools J River uses, but there are plenty out there:

I don't think VS2005 is required.  I think the previous version VS2003 also supports 64-bit architectures.

From the benchmarks I've seen, Win64 runs 32-bit apps basically as fast as Win32.  Native 64 bit apps get a few percentage performance boost.

The real killer now is dual-core chips.  Luckily MC is already heavily threaded to take advantage of this.

Still, a 64-bit compile is something we'd like to do.  Stay tuned.

Cool... I just got a new computer with a AMD Athlon 64 - 3400+

I bought an AMD dual core system.  Athlon 4400 X2.  I have to say I am really pleased with it.  It is fast as hell.  I found a 64-bit version of FireFox (Deer Park) -- I loads in less than a second, and loads complex pages in about a second.

While it is true that the WoW64 wrapper in XP x64 can run 32-bit apps, and there is not much of a performance hit notice from me in comparison to my old 32-bit machine, when I run 64-bit applications, I really notice a difference...they are very, very fast.  I would love to see how MC performs as such.

I did a bit of research on these.  AMD seems to be outperforming the Intel chips by a nice margin.  If anyone is looking to upgrade, and doesn't feel like building one, I bought mine here: http://www.jncs.com/static-temp/sys-adc.php

So far, I've been very happy with these guys -- plus they give you a 3-year warranty.
