Title: Bob, could you change the image size limit?
Post by: Alex B on August 10, 2005, 08:08:18 am
Bob,

Would it be possible to adjust the maximum image size? The current limit makes posting screen shots difficult.

In this post (http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=29157.msg201508#msg201508) I had to reopen the image, crop it slightly and resend it to my server for making it directly display correctly. Scaling screen shots makes them illegible and does not make them load faster. Besides, if the 8-bit png format is used the physical file sizes are quite small.

Here is another example: http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=29150.msg201540#msg201540

Perhaps a width of 800 pixels and an unlimited length (if possible) would be adequate. I understand that inexperienced posters link needlessly big images sometimes, but the moderation can easily change the image tags to URLs when needed.

Bump and an extra question:

It seems that the forum SW does not anymore alert the user if new posts have arrived when sending. Has this changed?

I moved the image size to 800 x 600. Hopefully that will do it. There is a limit on images using the http POST function. I thinks it's 2 megs.

Do you mean the notify function? I thought it was working ok. If I'm looking at the wrong thing let me know...

I suppose it is enough. The file size is not a problem. Screen shots compress suprisingly well with 8-bit png. Typically they are 10-40 kb.

Thanks!

No, I meant this:

The forum SW did not warn me that scthom posted a new message during I was writing mine (I answered to phone and had the write dialog open for several minutes). Has anyone else noticed that the behavior has changed?

marko stumbled on that too:

... missed your earlier post. you must have made it while I was compiling my reply. I didn't get the usual board warning. amazing how quickly we come to rely on neat features like that! ...

Upload your screenies to http://www.imagevenue.com/ and it will also create a thumbnail for you.  Here's an example. 8)

Yeah, but the problem with imagevenue.com, at least for me and I'm sure some others, is that they subsidize their service with mostly ads for porn sites.  For example, clicking on your thumbnail brings up the full image surrounded by ten ads, four of which are porn sites. ;)

I have posted many thumbnails & linked bigger images using my own web server, but that separates the screenshots and the text content. It is better to keep them together when trying to explain technical details.

Formerly the maximum size was 640x480. It was too small for many screenshots. The forum software downscales oversized images, which makes them blurred.

800x600 is much better. Here you can see the difference:
