I've bought recently one 250GB extenal hard drive that i want to use to back up my music files.
I don't want to make cd's/dvd's of all the stuff. And i want to delete files from the internal hard drive, and keep others, but i want to have them all in the external hard drive.
And i don't want to have it connected all the time, neither listen from it normally. Only if it's something that i want to hear and it's only there, that will be something that won't happen too much. So my question is:
¿There's a way to have a view with the stuff in the external hard drive, without have it connected? The same that there's a way to know what stuff you've on cd, with the cd/dvd view in advanced, and if you want to to know if you have, or where you have, some record, you only have to make a search in the cd/dvd view.
I want to do the same with the external hard drive. Is it possible? How?
Of course i understand that to have it archived in the library i need to import in the library the stuff in the external hard drive, but if i only have this way to know what there's in it, i'll end with lots of duplicates and lots of x when the external HD is off. If it's possible to do it like the cd/dvd view, won't be any duplicate neither x's.
Therefore, thinking that each day more people use external hard drives to store their media, the normal thing would be that it could be managed as the other store media (cd's and dvd's). Well, i thin so ;)
I hope the question is clear enough, if it's not i'll try to be clearer but try to understand my limited english ::)

I Have 4-Each External Firewire 300 Gig Drives, and about 600 gigs internal
I have somewhere near 300,000 mp3 files in multi name library (the more you get the slower MC is) on a 3.02 ghz computer.
All you need to do is turn off the drive, it will still show in the Library, but as missing files.
turn the drive back on and your good to go.
Did i miss your point?
If you have never heard this song, check it out and think of the love of your life, i know i do.

Why turn the drive off?
I have a 250gb that is about 2 years old, it has always been on...

in multi name library
In other words: Use File > Library > Library Manager for adding libraries. You will not have duplicates if the files are listed in separate libraries.

Some external get really hot, the next version of Maxtor drives will address this better, the first version did not dissipate the heat with a plastic case. the next version did a better job but they still get hot. this is one reason why maxtor will only guarantee them for 1 year.

The 2 I haev are Maxtor... 1Touch and 1Touch 2

I have Two "One Touch I" And Two "One Touch II"
I have modified them with 4 Rubber Feet (Radio Shack) And I Do Have A Fan That Cools All Of The Drives by blowing on the bodies of the cases.

I disassembled my maxtor and drilled a lot of holes in the plastic case (top and bottom), so far no heat probs yet.
