Title: Why is FLAC faster to stream with library server
Post by: soren on August 14, 2005, 02:04:33 pm

When using library server there is always a severe lag when jumping within a APE song on the clients.
I found that FLAC is much faster.

Why is that?

Not sure .. how do I tell?
Currently don't have many FLAC files, so did not give it much thought.

When I try to play FLAC files from a MC Library Server on a client without conversion to MP3 then I get following error:

“Media Center encountered errors while trying to play the last several files. Please make sure that the path in your media library points to the right location.”

If I let client convert to MP3 before playing then this works ok. I can also play FLAC files on the server and client without problems.

What can be wrong?

Make sure your APE files use Fast, Normal, or High compression.  Higher compression levels get quite a bit slower without as much gain in space savings.
