I tried to convert a wma file to mp3. The pop up displayed " MP3 encoder is not installed do you want to install?. I clicked Yes the MC11 crashed. The encoder is listed as being installed yet does not function.
I "installed" the MP3 by going to the plugin directory and selecting the" enc_mp3.dll ". It seemed to install but again MC11 keeps telling me the encoder is not installed.

In MC's plug-in manager, try uninstalling the encoder, then go to the web page and install it from there. If there's an error during install, solve that problem first.
What version of MC are you using? Update if not the latest.
DRM protected WMA can't be converted.

Actually, the Skins & Plugins download page does not currently contain an MP3 encoder for MC11, only for the previous MC versions. I had a discussion on this matter with Bob and he added the correct encoder plug-ins for the older programs.
hickok,
You could try the following:
- Uninstall the MP3 encoder plug-in with the Plug-in Manager.
- Delete the Enc_mp3.dll and lame.exe files from the [MC program path]\Plugins\ folder.
- Install the latest MC11 on top of your previous installation.
- Don't use the Plug-in Manager. Instead go to the MC options and start configuring MP3 encoding options. MC should now offer to download and install the MP3 encoder.
-
I think the best approach is to reinstall MC11, then try the convert again. If it crashes, let me know...

followed your advise and deleted MP3 there was no Lane file. I reinstalled without uninstalling. I got the mp3 endcoder.

You've got something special going on. It's not likely that it is just an MC problem.
Please copy your system info from MC Help and paste it here.
Make sure you have the latest version.
Uninstall, reboot, reinstall.

If I understand this correctly the problem is solved. Obviously the lame.exe file was missing. Something was wrong with the previous installation because an attempt to download the encoder crashed MC.

the reinstall did the trick I got the encoder up and running.
Thanks
