I'm trying out the trial of Media Centre 11 and so far it looks pretty impressive.
I've imported most of my library of 10,000 m4a (aac) files, but have 5 that crash media centre.
All five are pretty large files of between 68 and 92Meg allthough I have larger files that have imported ok
The files are on a mappped network drive if that makes any difference and the crash brings up an empty dialog of a red cross and a title of playbanckeng.
Thanks in advance

Were they encoded with Nero? If so, that problem has been reported before and we don't have any fix for it. Nero's AAC may not be compatible with Apple's.

No Jim,
They were done on ITunes
BTW they are Apple Lossless if that makes any difference

Update
I just copied one of the files to a local drive and it imported correctly but won't do when it's on the remote drive.

Try copying one or two files from the network server and see if you can import them.
What build of MC? You can copy your system info from MC Help and paste it here.

hello,
I am having the same problem with version 10.173 for files on the samba server.
Thanks

I am having problems with certain m4a files as well:
When I load an album into media center which contains .m4a files, it doesn't load completely and leaves out a couple of tracks. When I try to play the tracks from explorer, media center skips the track and starts playing the next one without warning me.
It doesn't crash though.
Can anyone help me out on this?

MC 10 and 11.0 can only use Apple's QuickTime engine for playing AAC files (m4a). Unfortunately QT has an old 64 character filename lenght limit (including the complete path). Apple has fixed that in iTunes, but not in QT (AFAIK).
I guess this is the cause of your problems.
The solution could be to try MC11.1 (11.1.98 is the latest) with certain DirectShow filters. Then it uses a different method for AAC files. You should backup your Media Library and read this thread first: http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=30561.0.
