Title: iPod Album Art - what's the big deal?
Post by: risingdamp on October 27, 2005, 02:23:06 am
I'm just curious as to why MC doesn't support this. What I mean is why isn't it a very simple change?  In fact why doesn't it 'just work' if the image is stored inside file?  Just curious as to the technical obstacles that make this a significant change.

I am not sure what the big deal is, But the Photo has been out for quite a while, and it's only been a few months that Anapod has worked with cover art, And that's all that they really do... But then again, Sound Check works with MC, not anapod...

I have a feeling that 11.1 will have the cover art, HOPEFULLY.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think I've read somewhere that the embedded cover art files are not used. Instead there is a separate folder where tiny copies of the cover art files are stored. The information about the cover art links is kept in the iPod's database file.

AlexB is correct.  The ipod is not using the image stored in the file tags.
Itunes copies 3 different sized copies of each image into subfolders on the ipod when you transfer a song.

JRiver needs to build similar code into their transfer routines.

They have stated that they have the groundwork for this done in 11.1 but still have some more work to do before it can be released.

Also, cover art's  may have to be resized for the display of the iPod.

I am not sure how ITunes works.... I killed that program really quick,

Anapod, DOES pick it up from the file itself, and/or a folder that you specify.

Right, but anapod is doing the conversions and resizing of that internal image and saving it out as multiple external images per the proprietary ipod specs when it does the transfer.  Not to mention that anapod isn't fully working either, they currently only do 48 images until they get the release done.

If ipod just read the image from the file instead of apple going off and doing their own proprietary thing, then it would already be working.

Not sure what you mean by:
they currently only do 48 images until they get the release done

per their webpage...it says it only will transfer 48 images at this time.  Once it's fully released it will do unlimited images.
Let me know if I'm misunderstanding this.

The below is quoted from anapod's website:

"As this is the first release to allow users to try the basic photo transfer capability, there are a few temporary known issues which will be resolved in a later release:

*Re-syncing with same set of files will be substantially sped up.
*Slight stretching of images in portrait orientation will be eliminated.
*Grouping of photos by album will be supported.
*GIF, PNG, and BMP image transfer will be supported.
*Full sized (original JPEG file) transfer will be supported.
*Transfer is currently limited to 48 photos (unlimited transfer will be supported).

I have Anapod Full Version, and Since June/July ish I have had no problems transfering around 10K of tracks mostly with Cover art to the pod.

When you get embedded art in the file that you already have on the pod, then you can select a setting to scan and import any art that you were missing.

Perhaps that 48 limit refers to images then and not cover art.

So, could we transfer the actual songs to ipod using MC 11.1, then have anapod do something to fix the cover art display, or do the songs need to be transferred via anapod also?

You should be able to transfer it, then use anapod to enable/show the art

Out of curiosity, were did you see the 48 pic thing.... I am sure I have transfered more then that at a time when I was playing with it.... Maybe an old version?

I think we're talking about 2 different things.  I'm referencing anapod photo, which is not out in a release version yet.  Now I'm pretty sure you're talking about anapod explorer.

Just a reminder that this forum is for MC.
