Did it ever work for you? What changed?
If nothing else works, remove the TiVo desktop and beacon, and then run Media Center. It will re-install the TiVo beacon and it should work.

Yes, I have been using the MC Tivo link for years.
Worked Great.
About a Mo ago after the new HMO option became available my Tivo connection (MC & Std Tivo Desktop connections) became intermittent. or they disconnected.
I would restart then they would work again.
I loaded 3-4 of the new Java based Tivo plug ins. also
Problems increased.
I deleted ALL of the plugins
Reloaded the 2.2 Tivo Desk top
Started using 11.1x due to issues I was having w/ iPod sync that Jim asked me to try 11.1x
I forgot to backup my Library so Now I am committed to 11.1 and can not go back to 11.0x
So yep unfortunately Both Tivo Desktop & MC Changed.
I check the Beacon service and it is running
Tivo Desktop & there stock Music & Photos are working correctly
I just like MC much better on Tivo.
Thanks for the help

Uninstalled Tivo Desktop
Uninstalled MC 11.1.047
Installed MC 11.1.047
Tested - Same Errors Beacon not found
Installed Tivo Desktop

Uninstall and reinstall again. This time, when you first start up the TiVo Server in Media Center, look at the status page. It should say it is installing the beacon. If it doesn't, then the beacon wasn't removed correctly. It's been a while since I tried it, but I think I had to remove the beacon separately from the desktop, and I did it through add/remove programs.
j
-
Still the same
There is NO beacon running as a service after the Tivo Install
There is no "Add/remove" entry for Tivo Beacon - ust Tivo Desktop
-
OK, Removed MC & Tivo Desktop
Manually removed teh Beacon files Dir in "Common Files/Tivo
Load MC
Started Tivo Plugin
It added Beacon & Prompted restart
Reboot
Tivo & MC worked but had errors
Copied Tivo Beacon files to backup
Loaded Tivo Desktop 2.2
Both Tivo & MC seem to work now
Note MC Tiovo files and 2.2 Tivo file are different.
Note: Tivo following erros when Music is played

I am having what sounds like the same issue. If I run MC, I get the API message you got and so I select reset beacon. It installs it, and prompts me to reboot. I do and it works through MC again, but then Tivo Desktop stops working. So I reinstall Tivo Desktop and then MC stops working. I am running Tivo Desktop 2.2, Tivo software 7.2, and MC 11.1.126
-
I've updated to the latest beacon in the next build, give that a try...

Tivo Server is now broken for me... I have been using it for a long time, has worked fine.....
But now with build 11.1.154 (And possibly a few before that), I get this:
03/24/06 18:39:14 - Starting...
....
03/24/06 18:40:32 - Unable to stop beacon.
03/24/06 18:40:32 - Existing Beacon removed.
03/24/06 18:40:32 - Installing new Beacon.

03/24/06 18:40:34 - Unable to copy new API.
03/24/06 18:40:34 - Please stop all programs (like TiVo Desktop) that might be using it.
If the problem persists, remove the TiVo Desktop application, reboot the system, and try again. You can reinstall the TiVo Desktop later.
So I uninstalled the Tivo desktop version 2.2, rebooted, and tried again. Same basic result:

Then, if I press the "Stop Server" button, Media center crashes.
Any ideas? Like I said, I have been using this fairly regularly, never had issues before. The only thing of interest is that a few days ago, when I installed the newest build of MC, I had to uninstall/reinstall it to get it to launch. I grab the newest builds almost daily, and had never had to do this before. MC works fine now, but I can't get the server to run......

Did you try "Reset Beacon" in the TiVo Server options?
j
-
Yes - The output I pasted in my previous message contains the output from when I did that - No luck.......
-
In Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Services, stop the TiVo Beacon.
Make sure nothing else (like TiVo Desktop) is running that is using the beacon.
Delete the contents of C:\Program Files\Common Files\TiVo Shared\Beacon
(if you cannot delete the files, there is something still using the beacon).
Then start Media Center and start the TiVo server. It should reinstall.
If you have any ideas what might have caused this, let me know...
j
-
I will try it tonight......
(I did notice that The tivo software has recently had a quarterly update - but the Tivo desktop has not changed....No mention of changes to protocol either in the release notes - not sure if that may be related....)
Thanks,
John

-Removed Tivo Desktop from Add/Remove Programs
-Went to Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Services, stop the TiVo Beacon, but it wasn't there (already removed).
-Deleted the contents of G:\Program Files\Common Files\TiVo Shared\Beacon
-Started Media Center, prompted to restart for server to work.
-Rebooted PC
-Started MC

Is that right? It still works.... But the messages sure make it sound like it didn't.
Also, it still always displays messages like:

...when navigating playlists, etc. Is this normal?
I'm not sure what the "fix" was - it appears to be removing those files, as I had already tried removing the whole desktop program.
One other thought: My C: <windows boot> drive is actually my G: drive, thanks to a windows reinstall with a mind of its own many years ago....Could the fact that mine is at G:\Program Files\Common Files\TiVo Shared\Beacon not C:\Program Files\Common Files\TiVo Shared\Beacon cause any problems?
Thanks,
John
-
Some other program is using the API - probably something besides the TiVo Desktop. Are you using any of the TiVo2Go apps?
Removing the desktop does not remove the shared files, those are left behind. You just need to stop all other applications from using them before they can be removed manually.
I don't think the G: would make a difference...

I do use the Tivo2Go functionality to transfer recordings off of the Tivo onto my PC to burn.... I'm just confused about what I may have changed that broke this....
For kicks, I reinstalled Tivo Desktop 2.2...... and as I expected, MC will not work again..... These seemed to co-exist fine for me before, but no longer...... I'm at a loss....
My first thought was that it was starting Tivo on startup (default option after reinstall) which was different than I had previously.... But I changed that, rebooted, and still no luck.....
Thanks,
John

I just upgraded to 11.1.161 from a previous build of 11.1. The TiVo server had been working just fine - once I got my firewall exceptions going. Anyway, my TiVo unit is not finding my server. I've resarted the server, rebooted the computer and when i tried to restart the Tivo Beacon I got this:
04/10/06 19:53:29 - Checking TiVo Beacon installation
04/10/06 19:53:29 - Removing existing Beacon.

The funny thing is that I never installed TiVo Desktop on this computer. It's not there, really... I checked.

Please try the build available in a thread near the top of this board.

Ok, so now I'm running build 171. The TiVo Beacon has loaded but I still have the original problem of media center not showing up on my TiVo unit. I even rebooted TiVo and turned off my firewall in case either of those were causing the problem.
Here is my system info just in case it helps:

Please double check your settings for the Tivo Server in MC (under Services and Plug-ins in the tree).

I'm a little nervous to reset the beacon because this caused problems for me before.

Can you ping the TiVo box from the Media Center computer?
j
-
Yes, I can ping my TiVo box from the server computer. Everything was working fine with the TiVo server until I upgraded from build 121 to 161 and then to 171. I'm finding this quite puzzling. ?
-
Can you convert to MP3 with MC on the server?
Try entering a name other than "NONE". It shouldn't matter....
-
Reboot the TiVo box next...
j
-
Yes, I've been ripping to MP3's all day long.
Actually the name field was blank by default. I've given it a name 'My Music' but i don't suspect it will make a difference.
This is interesting though...
Under Services -> Library Server I got:
04/11/06 06:51:05 - JRiver Library Server Version 1.0.31 starting...
04/11/06 06:51:05 - Trying Port 80
04/11/06 06:51:05 - Starting Auto Detect beacon
04/11/06 06:51:06 - Running on Port 80
04/11/06 12:19:31 - Received request for a file: TiVoConnect
04/11/06 12:19:31 - Error sharing file, file not found
This probably happened when I tried to manually add the server on my TiVo.
... and I did reboot the TiVo box both yesterday and today.

I'd suggest resetting the beacon at this point.
The message on library server is probably a TiVo fall-back method. If they don't find a TiVo server at a known port, they'll try port 80.

Tried resetting the Beacon and got the same result as in reply #17. Then during a CD lookup the program abended. This problem has happened before so you may get a post on it at some point but I'm not looking into it right now. Then when I restarted MC the TiVo Server has this to say...

I'll be restarting my computer in a little while and I'll see what affect that has.

Any luck with the restart?

No luck with the reboot. I'm contemplating a system restore unless you have some other ideas.
-
Are you running any other TiVo Server software? That may interfere with the reset process. If all else fails, try installing the TiVo Desktop, then resetting the beacon...

I'm not running any other TiVo software but I thought installing TiVo Desktop was a reasonable plan. The installer gave me the following err:
Internal Error 2753. TiVo Beacon.exe
I don't know if you have any info on this but I wanted to get it documented. I'm going to reboot and try the install again.

OK... I was trying to install the wrong version of TiVo Desktop. Version 2.2 installed just fine. And the MC TiVo Server started up just fine and seems to be working as expected. I do really like that I change the name in the Options. If fact that is what I really like about Media Center. That it give me the ability to customize it for my needs. No other media player is anywhere near as flexible.
Thank you. :)
